I'm seeing unverified reports that it was planted explosives. Which is almost more clandestinely and tradecraft badass than remotely causing batteries to overload, because how the heck do you set that supply chain up and remain within targeting parameters?

It was a recent group buy.  You just intercept the huge group buy of encrypted pagers going to Lebenon right after the Hezbollah leader said to stop using cell phones because the Jews tracked them.

Bonus points if you set up a front company and sell them the pagers.  Nothing like 5% profit on the op that blows the target's balls off.

I'd thing not. Most plastic explosives are pretty heat stable. I'm thinking they developed some sort of micro blasting cap that became part of the battery array.
