The days of the week...
« on: November 22, 2023, 08:30:39 PM »
...why can't old people pronounce them?

This may just be a regional thing, but it seems like a lot of older Americans pronounce the days of the week as if they end in "dee." What is that about?

I would bet it is a regional thing. It depends on the day and how lazy I am with pronunciation whether I use "dee" or "day" as the last part of the pronunciation. Next you will be complaining about those older people (especially from the NE) saying "fil-um" instead of "film" for that stuff you used to use in order to take photographic records of family and events with a magic box. ;)

What, like in Noo Yawk?

I was always curious about Wednesday, or Wensday, ear-wise.

Oh, and Febyouarey as opposed to Febrooary.

And in GB, "subway" is pronounced "underground."  That's a regional difference.

Reluctant to laugh at that, but did so anyhow.

Regional colloquialisms that have spread over time.

Like going to Baltimore and having someone pronounce wash as WARsh...

Or in my region of Central Pennsylvania where creek is almost universally pronounced crick.

Ha, I've started unconsciously doing that because everybody else here does.

I seem to pick up accents like that.  I worked for a guy with a Boston accent and found myself unconsciously using some of his pronunciations.

Been watching the gold-mining program "Aussie Gold" and foinding ("finding") myself Aussifying some of my werds.  Gotta stop that.

Regional. I don't here that at all out West.

Deliberate, right?  :)  Or AI intervention?

I seam to be finding homonyms in my own righting recently and been chalking it up to age, but I'm starting to think it might actually be sum kind of automatic "spell checking" from the great cyberbrain in the clouds, oar something like that.

Ha, I've started unconsciously doing that because everybody else here does.

Right after I started dating my ex wife I took her to one of the rural areas where I had spent a lot of time as a kid -- Fishing Creek. Only I called it Fishing Crick.

It was like that scene out of My Cousin Vinny... I was Vinny and she was the Judge... Excuse me, crick? What's a crick?

Sorry, your honor, CREEK. Fishing CREEK.

Gotcher "crick" beat, I think...

On a map of Ohio I spotted a small watercourse (printed in blue) labeled as "Sandy Hill Fr."  Just like that, "Fr."

Didn't quite drive me nuts trying to figure that out, but was relieved a couple of months later when I discovered it meant "Freshet," a small watercourse that only filled and flowed in heavy rains, but had a permanent little route.

I chalked it up as a "learning one thing a day" score.

It's the corrupting influence of the Internet. The one that haunts me is putting an asterisk before the final 's' in ANY (and every) word that ends in 's,' whether or not it's a possessive. I KNOW it's wrong, but my eyes see it so often on the errornet that my fingers (or "finger's") do it automatically, unless I pay careful attention to nip it in the bud. (With thanks to Barney Fife.)

That's a minor bĂȘte noir of mine and I've frivolously suggested we get rid of all apostrophes to cure the problem.

I got challenged once (not here) for using a final possessive apostrophe in the plural as in  "the hurricanes' damages."

Singular "hurricane"

Plural  "hurricanes"

Singular possessive "hurricane's"

Plural possessive "hurricanes' "

But the possessive form of "it" is "its" with no apostrophe.

"The color of its fur was gray," not "the color of it's fur was gray."

Go figure.
