Elder respect
« on: December 29, 2023, 11:53:54 AM »
Just came back from a week with the daughter and her family for Christmas. Grandaughters are college age. One on break from school in Alaska has a native friend and roommate. There is some native mix in some of the extended friends and family in Washington also. We had a big dinner and son in law cooked $300 worth of beef fillet and a leg of lamb.
As the oldest people there, my wife and I were treated with much respect and called grandfather and grandmother by all the younger people even if not related.
At one point I overheard one of the adults tell a young teenager to see if Grandfather wanted anything and then I realized they meant me.
It was a new experience but quite nice.
What we have here is failure to communicate.

  • I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

I knew I was grown when a youngster called me "Sir" for the first time and cashiers stopped asking me for ID when I was buying beer.

Both of these took place more years ago than I'll admit.  ;)

Today, I'm moderately happy that I still I get asked if I'm eligible for a Senior Discount, rather than just getting it applied automatically.

"Sir" is my Dad.  I've never gotten used to that.

I bet you do know things, just not what they expect.
