Yes, and a Glock pistol.

Why is there a LE agency, or anyone for that matter in 2024 still using a holster that has been known junk for many, many years?

From, I presume, her lawyers:

Quote
According to the lawsuit, Blackhawk introduced the Serpa in 2006 as "a retention holster for duty weapons issued to members of the United States armed services, including the United States Marine Corps, to be used with the standard issue M9 Beretta duty pistol." Blackhawk later began selling the holsters to civilians. But not all civilians have M9 Beretta guns, and those other weapons can have different safety mechanisms than the M9, the lawsuit states.

Aren't they shooting themselves in the foot by stating that the Serpa was designed for the M9? Seems pretty easy to argue that she shouldn't have been using the holster with any other gun.

1. Poor Training

2. Poor execution of the training received

3. Glock

4. Serpa Blackhawk

That is probably how I would look at the failures if I were investigating this. The last two could be a toss up and tied back to 1. Some Glocks and Blackhawk holsters out there that have had an ND associated with them and tons that have not had an ND so I would go back to training and execution.

Anecdotally. I have heard if you keep your fingers away from the bang switch until on target (or at least the gun in front of you and not pointed t your body) the gun has a substantially less chance of firing unexpectedly and launching a searing hot freedom seed into your soft parts.

Also, WHAT?!? Her fellow cops didn't get her to the hospital? One assumes that a tourniquet = a major wound.

Fellow officers applied a tourniquet and Turner drove herself to a local hospital. Her wound did not heal on its own, however, and it September 2022 she had to have surgery.

If you use a serpa in 2024, you deserve what you get.

There was a pretty sobering video out some years ago of a HIGHLY trained and competent firearms person using a Serpa.

I think Tamara posted it on her FB page or her blog, but it started out as an investigation into whether the Serpa was as bad as some people were claiming it to be, or if it was operator error.

Even the guy in the video had serious problems with the Serpa.

A lot of people:

OMG, gun shot wound, blood, extremity, slap on your tourniquet. A lot of times a a decent pressure bandage is more than enough to suffice. But yea, who was thinking, Hey,  tis but a flesh wound, let her drive herself.Maybe that is the reason she had ongoing issues. ;)

I hate making excuses for cops with shitty training, but:

Current TCCC protocol is if you have a gunshot wound in an extremity and have an approved TQ handy, slap it on.

There is almost no downside (except pain) and it saves you the lost blood figuring out weather or not a pressure dressing will suffice.

They probably did the right first aid.

Of course they apparently allow police officers to use Serpa's , so they better have good first aid training.

No. This was a lot more recent than that, and it was filmed indoors on a range with a high def/high speed camera.

So history continues to repeat itself.

I'm surprised that the manufacturer still sells the Serpa line. It was a dumb design then, and it's a dumb design now.

https://www.safeinsight.net/post/are-serpa-holsters-dangerous

This guy goes through all the things to do that prevent pulling the trigger during the draw.

Apparently, historically, people don't do them.  Fact.

Males me think it's a design fault.

Also makes me wonder how many military incidents like that went unreported except internally.

Most professional trainers don't allow Serpas in classes.  When a whole industry dosen't allow use of your product that's what you call a clue.

Now I'm curious about something.  I've heard of the ridicuously high "New York Trigger Pull"  (12 lb?) instituted for safety.  Does the NYPD use Serpas, and if so, would that be the reason for the heavy trigger weight requirement?

? ? ?
