I don't think he (or anybody who hasn't evacuated New York) understands how New Yorkers "think." They don't. For the most part, they follow the mental fields of everybody else due to their close proximity to each other. The "lemming" analogy has been overused. I prefer the "schools of fish" or "flocks of birds" images / videos which seem to describe it better.

You will notice that any time a separation seems about to occur, they immediately reconvene,
Similar images exist for schools of fish.
The technical term for this is murmuration:
https://www.eat.blue/animal-welfare/what-is-murmuration/For fish it's sometimes called "shoaling."
This communal behavior seems to exist in most other human densely-populated areas, that is, "cities."
Despite all attempts to separate humans from animals, humans are still subject to animal behavior and instincts.
