"Memes"??
« on: June 23, 2024, 06:10:52 PM »
Is there a thread here for assorted memes? I've looked but can't find any and, with all the years of "collecting", I have quite a few to share.
YES, some are "political", some are philosophical, some refer to COVID, some are just funny.  I would like to share them and see what many of you have as well.
Here's a few examples.

“I have little patience with people who take the Bill of Rights for granted.  The Bill of Rights, contained in the first ten amendments to the Constitution, is every American’s guarantee of freedom.” - - President Harry S. Truman, “Years of Trial and Hope”

Is there a thread where I can complain that most memes aren't memes?

This was my last girl at 13.  She loved getting into the weeds.  Her mother was a "liver-on-white" Springer and daddy was a stray shorthaired mutt.  The vet had given us 5 pills (1/day) to keep her from getting pregnant, but 1 slipped through.  Yeah, just one.  I wasn't sure about keeping her but at 8 weeks she was already retrieving.
Her ashes are on a bookcase and will be buried with mine.

Ditto with Inge and my favorite cat.  I wonder what restrictions there may be on burial with pets.  Pet ashes, no problem, who's to know? but otherwise...?  Marlon Brando's ashes were mixed with Wally Cox's ashes, but that was two humans.

Yea, so far these are digital age motivational posters. A meme needs a readily understood visual context or three that communicates the info.

The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 5th Edition • More at Wordnik:

---------------
meme
/mēm/

noun
A unit of cultural information, such as a cultural practice or idea, that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another.

Any unit of cultural information, such as a practice or idea, that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another.

A self-propagating unit of cultural evolution having a resemblance to the gene (the unit of genetics).
---------------

If you want to regard that as "official," the "any" allows for a wide range of usages.

Is "assault weapon" a meme?

Is "for only nineteen dollars a month" a meme?

Is "take out the garbage" a meme?

Is the mushroom cloud image a meme?

Is the middle finger salute a meme?

I don't get either of those two or the time machine connection.

SHAEF* was warned by General Patton that there was a lot of activity on the other side of the forest, was basically ignored, and  whammo, then came the Battle of the Bulge.

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious.

The beauty and impact of McAuliff's message was its brevity and power:

"Nuts."**

Why does adding "deez" to it help anything?

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious.

Please don't use the old "If you don't get it, there's no use explaining it" ploy.  I don't get it, please explain it.

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious.

*Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces,

** Some maintain that he said that when he read the request to surrender, and  it was actually communicated to the enemy by accident.  Be that as it may, it's a great "meme" all by itself and was portrayed in some movie or another. (Note the quotes, since we haven't firmed up what a meme is yet.)

It's funny because of the contrast and the role reversal.  The boys actually try to help. (I'm impressed that they know that much history)  The men, who should be more mature, pick the same battle and try to make a juvenile joke with it.  ("Deez nuts", I'm not sure why that's funny)

There's a whole bunch of "girls with a time machine v. boys with a time machine" memes going around right now.  This one is just a little different.

I don't know whose face is pasted in for the boy.

Mmmmkay.  Specialized cultural knowledge required. Similar to an "Inside Joke."

I'll admit to not being privy to a lot of specialized cultural knowledge. I guess in this case imy confusion was because those images bumped up against my specialized historical knowledge.

I have supplemented my specialized cultural knowledge by the following:

^  Wow.  Tragifunny, and my "FAKEMETER" was getting close to the red "FALSE" zone.

Sixty-five hundred bucks for "deez nuts." I wonder how the value was determined.  I can't imagine re-implanting them would restore their functionality, but who knows what the cold facts are?

I'm getting more "specialized cultural knowledge" in this thread than I bargained for.

I don't know who those faces are pasted onto American Gothic.  I have seen the girl's face a lot in other memes, mostly on Twitchy.

Looks like an antenna in the background over the girl's right ear.

Shows up in a blowup of this image, too:

https://i5.walmartimages.com/asr/26f9dc37-dbb1-47cf-867e-756c3ceb167a_1.1513f894cbcea7bd5d6229934b5beb34.jpeg

I can understand an antenna in a photograph from the 1930s, but in a painting done later by memory from hand sketches?

A wrinkle in the canvas or whatever?

I thought maybe it was one of those copyright ploys, small hard-to-notice details added to prove an image (or music, whatever) was copied without authorization, but that seems strange, too.

Any insights on that?

I'm not seeing anything that would make me think antenna.
Are you talking about the vertical line that appears above the tree line? If so that looks like a crease in the canvas to me

Yes, over her right ear.  Selective perception since I'm a radio operator?

I did mention "A wrinkle in the canvas or whatever?" in my post, this does not appear in your quote.  I edit interminably, so maybe you took the quote before I added that.

Still looked more like an antenna to me, somehow, since it does not continue into the trees.  I do know that the painting differed from the actual house in some respects.
