Would you be missed if you died at work?
« on: August 30, 2024, 03:06:23 PM »
A lady working for Wells Fargo scanned into work on Friday and was found 4 days later, dead in her cubicle.

While there is a lot of snark that can be generated I find it sad that a 60 year old woman can go to work on a Friday and not be missed by anyone over a 4 day period. I get it is a cube farm (most likely) but how can a person croak at work and not be found for 4 days? I am at a loss here, no family, no friends, what? I would like to think that if I went tits up suddenly someone would at least be concerned I haven't shown up but in actuality if I weren't married I am not sure I would be missed. It kind of makes one sit back and contemplate life, or the ending of life somewhat. Luckily this lady started to stink up the area or she could still be there, not to be found until an audit was done and it was fond out her job performance was lacking.

Not sure about my new boss, but the district manager would likely throw a pretty good tantrum.

80% of government employees could drop dead and I doubt they would be missed

I currently work in a small municipal office, and I think if I were to croak in my cube someone would notice. That said --

The article I read on this incident mentioned that most of the Wells Fargo workers "in" that office work remotely. I believe our colleague, K Frame, was in such a situation during the COVID idiocy, and may still be. Many employers who sent their workers home during the pandemic have been encountering resistance when trying to get workers to return to the hive. I know an IT manager for a major university who has an office in a building the university rents, about half an hour from his home. He hasn't set foot in that building for a year and a half, at least.

I am often the last person to leave on Friday. If I were to die just after everyone else left, the earliest I would be found would be Monday morning. Our office has cubicles, but it's hardly a cube farm -- we have four cubicles, each of which can be seen by both secretaries, and the boss has to walk past them to get into his office. This poor woman apparently WAS in a cube farm, and her cubicle was described as "off the main aisle."

The sad part is, though, that the building has 24/7 "security." One wonders just how diligently "security" actually perform their appointed rounds -- or if they have any appointed rounds at all.

Don't know.

Don't care.

"I believe our colleague, K Frame, was in such a situation during the COVID idiocy..."

Sorry, it wasn't me. Well, I "worked" remotely for a grand total of maybe 3 days during the opening stages of Kung Flu when they were still trying to figure *expletive deleted*it out before I got laid off from that job.

Then I joined my current employer in May 2020.

But, given the work that I do, it can't be done remotely. It has to be done in a secured location, a SCIF.

We were going through all sorts of crazy arrangements to make it work, though. Broke the SCIF into two teams. First team spent 6 hours in the SCIF starting at 6 am, and then would go into the the unclassified area to work the final 2 hours.

The second team (I was on team 2 at the time) went into the office at 10 a.m., spent 2 hours in the unclassified area, then at noon went into the SCIF for 6 hours.

Pain. In. The. ass.

I'm not sure that I'd really do well with remote work. I need a break between my home and my work. All of my toys are at home. I'd probably never get anything work related done.

But didn't you say that on many occasions you were the only live person in the office?

Uhm... no?

There aren't many people in my primary work location, and there are times when I may be the only one in the SCIF, but there are definitely people there.

There are a LOT of people at the other office, and always have been, to the point of it being almost overcrowded.

That's one of the reasons why I refused to move to that office when it opened -- WAY too may people.

As I figured there would, there have been at least a dozen COVID outbreaks there since it opened.

At the height of COVID, there would be several days in a row in which I was the only person physically in the office. I actually wondered about that very thing: if I had a stroke or MI, how long would it be before someone found me. I am reasonably sure that my wife would wonder if I did not come home at night and she did not hear from me.

Former coworker died at home.  She lived alone. Iirc she wasn't found for a while.  At least a few days.

I imagine the woman in this story had nobody at home to miss her.  A cube farm where it's hard to see folks, especially if off the main aisle, and it's not toooooo surprising she wasn't noticed. If she died on a Friday evening it would have been Monday at least, so that's 3 of the 4 days.  I would imagine by day 4 people would be looking for the source of the smell.

Our oldest died in his apartment, was not found for a week.  It was not unusual for him not to be reachable for a while, not to answer the phone or immediately return voicemail.

Being single, I've often thought about this very thing.

One thing working in my favor would be if I don't show up for work unannounced it kicks off (or it should) a series of escalations through my work.

Because of the security clearances I hold and because of whom I support, my unannounced absence is supposed to be reported to my primary supervisor and program security as soon as no one can get in touch with me.

Once my boss and security can't get in touch with me it's reported to the customer and it's reported to my emergency contacts. If my emergency contacts can't get in touch with me (or they can't get in touch with my emergency contacts) it's reported to local emergency personnel.

Of course, if it happens over a weekend or while I'm on scheduled leave... it could be awhile.

My only concern with something like that happening is Seren.

A friend of mine has a similar problem with SS.  The people can't seem to separate her account and her late husband's account and have stopped her benefits again.
