Downloading Youtube Videos via VLC?
« on: August 04, 2024, 04:30:40 PM »
Am I crazy, or is it no longer possible to download and save youtube videos via VLC?

This has been my tried and true method, but I haven't done so in probably a year. I was just organizing my youtube "reference" playlist and wanted to download some recently saved videos. VLC does nothing but throw errors.

On the tinfoil side, I had actually saved the instruction video for how to do it, and that is no longer in my playlist. Nor is anything VLC related in my history. I'm wondering if youtube is cracking down on downloads?

Eh, nevermind. Yes, youtube is being youtube. I just found a video that said they changed their .lua file system and apparently everyone is waiting for one of the open source hackers to create an updated .lua interface for VLC that will work with the changes.

Oh, follow up question: I think some of you have youtube premium. I know it lets you download videos, but then what? Are they yours to watch in whatever viewer, move to a storage source, and generally be able to view like any mpeg? Or are you restricted in how you can view them? For instance, can I pay for youtube premium for a month, download a bunch of videos, then watch them wherever offline after I cancel premium?

This one works well for me, and not just on Utoob.

I used it while I was at my Dad's in Oregon last week in July.

Mine works just fine. Does playlists too! Just snagged the "James Gang's Greatest Hits" that I had on 8-Track back in high school.

I also use https://www.videosoftdev.com/free-audio-converter/download to rip them to MP3 files.

I was only vaguely aware that you could use VLC that way.  I used youtube-dl, until development on that stalled.  yt-dlp is a fork of that that is still updated.

If something doens't work, update to current.  YT will change something that makes this break, Whoever's doing yt-dlp will fix it.
