Looking at a suppressor...
« on: August 05, 2024, 07:26:59 AM »
A local purveyor of stuffs has a Sig Sauer SRD22 can sitting in a case for $200. So $400 and change out the door... That's more than what I'd blow making one myself, but... I wouldn't be putting an estimated 10 hours into figuring out how the stuff works, and then doing setups and cutting things...

Anyone hear anything about 'em? It's gonna go on a KelTec P17 shooting subsonic .22LR... Yeah, I do know that I can spend more and get more, but heck...

For Clarity:

SRD22X supressor, or SDP22 Supressor?

The SRD22X has a titanium tube, stainless "M" baffles, and can be easily ID'd because the tube has a step at each end for the endcap threads.  It's a steal at that price and I'd jump on it in a heartbeat.

The SDP22 is their "older" can with and aluminum tube, stainless blast baffle, and aluminum baffle stack.  The Al baffles mean you can't clean it with an ultrasonic.  Comes with 1/2-28 and M9 endcaps so that's nice.  As I recall from m y buddy shooting his, it's decent.  Not the quietest can out there, but realistically .22 subs suppresses pretty well and will be pretty quiet anyway.  I'd probably still buy it for $200.  That's a good price. More so because it's local and you don't ahve to pay shipping or anything.

I would agree with dogmush.  I know nothing about that suppressor, but the price is good and 22 suppressors are fun to shoot.  And now is the time to get the stamp approved quickly.  My last one took about 2 weeks.

Now is definitely the time.

The can I bought on July 16, the eForm 4 took 36 hours.

I need to check the alignment on my Keltec P17.  It shoots pretty good unsuppressed, but the aim is off with the suppressor on.  I will try to do that this week.

I have had success using CCI "standard velocity" ammo as subsonic.  I have seen the CCI subsonic and "Quiet" ammo as well.  I don't know if the "Quiet" ammo will cycle the action.

Aguila used to make a 60 grain subsonic load.  I haven't seen that in a while.

Might as well get another one started, in case this one takes a while.

In The Before Times, when tax stamps were 9 months to a year, I was keeping a can or two in NFA jail at any given time, just so I always had happy surprises coming my way.

Ha!  I was in that boat for a couple years.  It was relatively easy when approval times took 8 to 11 months.  I am not sure I could afford that now.

My last can I bought from a different outfit that will ship it directly to you (Capitol Armory).  Took a week or so to get all the paperwork and fingerprints set up, but that went okay.  Main issue is it took a couple weeks to get it to me after approval.  I think their procedure is to mail the LEO notification after approval and wait until the return receipt before they ship the can.  It all worked out, but I would seriously consider driving to San Antonio to pick it up next time.

I have bought 3 cans from Griffin Armament (who use Capitol Armory).  I think I talked about it before.

I really like them as they are quick and easy.  Especially for repeats where your fingerprints and picture are already in their system.  You do get a couple days lag as you do each step online, and then yes, the non-over-the-counter 4473 requires mailing something to the CLEO, getting the delivery confirmation back, and then a 7 day wait for the CLEO to not object.  When Tax stamps were 8-12 months that wasn't a big deal in the grand scheme.  When the stamp is 36 hours it starts to be more annoying.

I try to keep it in perspective.  My last can I ordered on July 13th (a Sat) , and UPS dropped it off at my door on Aug 2.  Had a local SOT had one in stock that I wanted, I would have got it faster, sure.  But if I need to order one, form 3 to a SOT, go back, eForm 4, then go back and pick up I don't think I'm much faster than the "Silencers to your door" program.

If you live near San Antonio, yeah, go pick it up.

"Near" San Antonio is subjective.  That city is just short of a 4 hour drive, one way.  That is why I didn't drive up there the last time.   =)

Silencer Shop uses my preferred FFL.  It is my first choice.  Capitol Armory often has stuff in stock that Silencer Shop does not.  It is a good backup.

Choices are a good thing.    =)

I admit also, it tickles me to have UPS drop a silencer off at the house.  Makes it almost feel li,e all those anti gun talking points are getting a little closer.   =D

When I do 9mm and .223 cans, those are going to be home brew... The place I did the deed for the .22LR can does online stuff with F-Troop.

See if they will give you your encrypted fingerprint file.  Once you have that you can drop your form 1's for the homebrew cans on the website yourself.

I do all my form 1's on the eForm website,  and it's almost too convenient.   It gets you used to paying taxes on a right.
