Sometimes things go smooth
« on: August 05, 2024, 03:15:03 PM »
We left the house for a couple of hours Friday night, and when we came back the A/C was blowing warm air, and the house was about 5 degrees hotter than it should have been. There was no condensation on the coil, either.

The following morning, I checked for an obviously blown capacitor, or a stuck fan motor, or something, but soon exhausted my meager HVAC skills. So I called a few different places. As it was Saturday, I wasn't surprised that no one answered their phones. In a few minutes, though, I did get a call back, and he said he'd be over in the next 90 minutes. In fact, it turned out to be about 75 minutes between my leaving a voicemail and having our air back on. He replaced a capacitor, and that was that. Charged us $260.

I figured I would be waiting until Monday or Tuesday, which would not have been fun. It was hot all weekend, and the forecast says 98 tomorrow, so...

Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God?

We had one of those strangely smooth things weekend before.  At a reunion, my sister and I were going to meet my brother to sign some documents in front of a notary.  This is on a Saturday, in the closest town, which is 15 miles away, and he's traveling 350 miles to get there.  A friend arranged all this.  She's local and knew the notary, that's the reason Saturday was even an option.  Since my brother was pulling a trailer, she arranged for us to meet him at McDonalds and carpool into town.  As we took the exit to McD, she called him to tell him the exit number, and he had just pulled into the parking lot.  Directly from there to meet the notary in town.  They have a parade going on so some streets are closed, but she knew the side streets to avoid all that.  As she parked, she explained we would need to walk two blocks to meet him, the office is closed, and just then he walks up to meet us as we got out of the car.  So what I figured would take an hour to coordinate took five minutes, and that included driving!  I literally couldn't imagine it going better.

To keep the engine of Karma in balance, three weeks ago our AC went out, on a Friday evening, and turns out the "express shipped" motor will be here next month.  After a couple days, the outstanding tech did find a used motor that was close enough after she did some magic to make it work, and that will keep it cool-ish until the expensive fancy motor gets here.  $260 might be a down payment on the final bill.
The feral government is the only group in the known universe that can promulgate a 26-page form that collects two pages of information accompanied by 24 pages of incoherent instructions, and proclaim at the bottom of page 26 that the document complies with the paperwork reduction act.
