KelTec Sub2000: Now in 5.7
« on: September 02, 2024, 10:55:10 AM »
so yeah
Not sure if the mag is compatible with anything else, S&W, Ruger, PSA, etc... unless I missed something

I notice there is no rear sight post, but I also saw the Gen 3 9mm model doesn't have one either.

I guess it is a natural expansion of that product line, but it seems to me they could have tried something different with the folding mechanism (side ways?).  Also, is the FN mag the best choice?  Both S&W and PSA have a higher capacity magazine.  Hell, figure out how to include the 50 round mag.

It appears to be half a pound lighter than the 9mm model.  An improvement, but not much.  Makes me think the reciprocating mass will still be significant.

It's an interesting Idea, but If I was going to run a KEL-TEC in 5.7 I'd be way more interested in putting a stock on a P50.

I assume it's still a blowback gun, which 5.7 is right on the edge of too spicy for.  MechAg is very likely correct that the reciprocating mass is probably pretty high.

I just don't know... I've been watching the 5.7 since it came out and I still just can't put my finger on what it is actually good for.

Has anyone done testing on full cooch SS190 loaded 5.7 against modern plates?  Like the level III or III+ plates lots of folks are running?

I know it was originally designed to be light armor piercing in the 90's, but that was in the days of soft armor and *maybe* an original SAPI plate.  I wonder if it's lost what little tactical utility it once had.

I will say a P90 is light, handy, carries a lot of ammo, and is very controllable, so a mediocrely trained person can usually get several rounds on target pretty quick.  You can get 2400FPS or so out of a P90, so frag and tumbling is possible in close.

ETA: IF you can find SS190

In a package that enables you to put a lot of rounds into a very small area it's effective. That is if its in something like a full auto P90, in a semi, not so much. So IMHO in a P90 the round make a lot of sense, in a PS90 or one of the, now, many hand guns out there, Na

Same here.  I’ve considered buying a gun that shoots the 5.7, and even have about 500 empty brass cases, but just can’t seem to find a good reason to buy one.

Well, if you want a small bullet with a little more power than a .22 rimfire magnum . . . more or less on par with a .22 Hornet, but better suited to semi auto pistols and rifles, the 5.7 has a purpose. (In a rifle I'd rather go with .223.) In a pistol? Maybe for someone with low recoil tolerance due to injury, age, or arthritis . . . as a centerfire, it should be more reliable than a rimfire.

Bottom line? A full auto P90 is interesting to me - and not legally obtainable. Every other firearm? Not so much.

They do sell the AR57 clone upper that works with an AR lower.  Takes the 50 round mags.  Hell, I bought that thing and didn't think about an FRT or binary.

My Dad often carries a Kel-tec CMR-30 when he walks in the woods in the early morning.  22 Magnum is good enough to kill a hog even if it doesn't drop dead immediately.  5.7 would be slightly more powerful with good capacity and reliability.

I have the PSA 5.7 Rock pistol.  Same thing.  More powerful than a 22 LR or 22 mag pistol with the same lack of recoil and weight.

Just out of curiosity, how's the muzzle blast? I ask because I used to have a Ruger .22lr/.22mag convertible sixgun and I always thought the .22 mag gained a LOT more muzzle blast than it did power over the .22lr.

5.7 has plenty out of a pistol.  Longer barrels are better.  A small CMR-30 clone in 5.7 would be what I would want.  I have the extended hand guard.  Very light package with decent capacity.

MAC just dropped this video on a takedown 5.7.
Kind of sort of like an AR-7 in 5.7 but single shot

Not really my thing, but since we were talking about 5.7 in this thread, the YouTube algorithm pitched me this today.

Looks like PSA wants to dip their toes in the PDW market.

I'm agreeing with everyone else; the 5.7 is a specialty round developed specifically to work with a weapons system like the P90. It doesn't make sense in the sub2k but they will probably sell them.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

To be perfectly honest, I'd be more interested in a Sub2000 in .30 Carbine, or even .30 Super Carry.

IIRC someone back in the 1960s or so shortened the .30 Carbine from 33 mm to... 25mm? and range up a couple of wildcats... One was straight .30, using the same 110 gr. bullet, and I think another one was in .25 caliber?

There might have even been one chambered for .22 (sort of a shortened Johnson Spitfire round).

Any of those could be fun, but I think they flopped faster than a Euroweenie soccer player, so likely absolutely nothing for them in the way of loading info, dies, etc.

And I know someone has been playing around with a full-length case necked to .17 called the Pee Wee or something like that.

I've always wondered if it would be possible to make a P90 like PDW in 30 carbine with a similar magazine design. Action would have to something different from the P90's straight blowback.

While I'm with you on that it would require pretty much a complete redesign
S2Ks are blowback and you would have to change the action to something other than that to handle 30C and that would also complicate the way they fold. Plus a 30C capable magazine would be too long to fit in the grip as is.

Doesn't mean you couldn't make a S2K like gun in 30C though it would require pretty much a new from the ground up design

Don't get me wrong, you could make a blowback 30 carbine but it would require an overly heavy bolt and spring to delay the action enough to safely fire

Did some googling and some people already did the math and the bolt for a blowback 30C would have to be ~3.2lbs.
For comparison a typical AR-15's BCG is under a pound at ~11-12oz

I mean you could do it but it's going to be heavy.
