Samsuck refrigerator
« on: September 18, 2024, 11:18:10 AM »
The 9 year old one in the basement is still working.
The 4.5 year old more expensive one in the kitchen is not.
Woke up to a distressed wife and had to shuttle everything down to the basement instead of enjoying my first mug of coffee.
Kinda glad we kept the older one when the wife got all new appliances and countertops.

I spoke to an appliance repair man a while ago, and he said while Samsung consumer electronics (e.g., televisions) are pretty good, their kitchen appliances have a spotty record. Sounds like you got one of the good ones (9 years old) and one of the not-so-good ones (Broken in 4.5 years.)

I HATE spending money on something that's supposed to be good . . . and it isn't. It's not just the money - it's the inconvenience and headaches.

Yeah, Ben's Appliances on YouTube has a less than stellar opinion of Samsung refrigerators. His channel seems a good resource for appliance quality.

Yeah, don't buy Samsung consumer appliances.

The fridges are mediocre at best, but the washing machines? Suck festivals, apparently.

The more complicated, the more high-techy, the more problems you're going to have.

Goes for a LOT of things... When I open the hood on a car (after the owner doesn't know how to...), and I can't see the battery, and the dipstick is hidden away in some sort of crevice, that's a clue that the designers thought that only morons would pay that much for their intended product...

Analog is easy to fix, and usually works until that analog part wears, at which point, the part is generally easily sourced.

Heck - the door switch on a lot of the dang appliances is what goes first... And it's only a few bucks.

I called Samsung after wasting too much time in their live chat.
The CS person I got on the phone was actually knowledgeable. He told me most cooling problems are computer related.
I did a power reset 2-3 minutes off and it is now 36 degrees in the fridge and -2 in the freezer.

My wife has a friend that works in Samsung’s warranty dept. she told me that their appliances have close to an 80% warranty claim rate. Stick to their TVs, phones, and tablets. Avoid anything else like the plague.

80%?

YIKES!

I've had multiple Samsung TVs and phones and have liked to loved every one of them.

My 32" Samsung HDTV - which I'm using right now as a computer monitor - is just fine. Been using it for around a dozen years. And after 3 years I just upgraded from one cheap Samsung phone to another - a low end entry level smartphone, it meets my needs just fine.

I've resolved to avoid Samsung kitchen appliances - they seem to be on a par with what happened to Kenmore kitchen appliances in the 5-10 years prior to Sears' final collapse.

Funny, but about 30 years ago, the first Samsung product I remember seeing was a microwave... With a dial.

My wife picked the samsuck appliances because she liked the bronze finish. I had no say in it.
That means when this thing dies for good I’ll be buying a new fridge, dishwasher, microwave, and range/oven. Actually whatever dies first will cause all to be replaced.
I’m feeling the pain already…

Unfortunately, problems are limited to Samsung.
I have a 43" Sharp Aquos LCD TV (15-18 y.o.) that is going nuts.  When I turn it on, I get a good picture and sound - for about 30 seconds.  Then I spend the next 7-8 minutes cycling it off & on with the sound OK but the picture looks like a kaleidoscope for a fraction of a second, then goes black.  Finally, after about 25-30 cycles, the picture comes on clear with no other problems.

I was in the same position a couple of years ago with a 2008 model year Samsung TV.

It started doing odd things on start up, the most common of which was a screen full of alternating red and green lines. Sometimes it would screech like a banshee when I turned it on.

Obviously it was getting old and something was crapping out.

I paid over $1,000 for that TV back in 2008. It was a 40 inch model.

In January 2022 I paid $479 for a 65" Samsung class 7. Yeah, the technology was 2 to 3 years old at the time, but it is leaps and bounds ahead of my 2008 TV.

At 15 to 18 years old, that TV owes you nothing, and you owe it nothing. You more than got your money's worth.

You can get a similarly sized Samsung from Best Buy for $250.

If you go with another brand, you can get one for even less. Hell, Best Buy's Insignia brand 43" is $170. At that price I might get one for my office upstairs at the house. I've been considering getting a TV for my office for some time.

We just replaced a 10 yr old Aquos for the exact same reason. Problem kept getting progressively worse until it  finally failed completely. On the upside, it was the bedroom tv so no need for higher-end performance and mid-size tv's are surprisingly inexpensive.

Sometimes, note sometimes, just reseating the cable from the main board to the panel will cure that, at least in laptops.

14-year-old TV and I wanted a bigger one anyways?

Not worth the effort of trying to figure out how to get into it.

Well, now the Samsuck LP oven won’t heat.
Probably an igniter. Broiler fires up. The local appliance store had great service and parts but they went out of bidness and closed a couple months ago.
I can fix it myself if I can source an igniter or I’ll have to order one.

Thanks for the offer. I really need the oven Saturday. If I have to, I can swap the broiler igniter into the lower oven burner but then I would have to tear into it twice. Apparently nobody within 45 miles will service Samsuck appliances.
From what I could gather, they are kinda universal. An appliance store 25 miles away has one that according to them looks identical but has a different part #. I'm going to risk $38 on that. If it doesn't fit, I'll swap igniters and order 2 from you. Apparently, the igniters are a common issue?

Are you sure that the same igniter is used for both the oven and the broiler?

I've seen gas stoves where they are very, VERY different parts with absolutely zero interchangeability.

And it looks like Amazon has lots and lots of options.
