My oh so wonderful local small town police are stopping volunteers from clearing fallen trees and cleaning brush because they don’t have business licenses. They are also being real aholes to the citizens trying to get what they need at local stores.
Sounds like an opportunity to start filming their actions and posting videos, especially if the individual officers are identified. I suspect various news organizations would be interested as well.
Trump won in 2016. And again in 2024. Democrats haven't been so offended since Republicans came along and freed their slaves.

The big questions that need to be answered in this tragedy are:

1. How is this racist?

2. How is Trump responsible?

If any of you watch the retro computer channel LGR this video from another channel popped up in my YT feed. Clint's home in NC suffered "incredible" damage so he'll be off line for a while but he is he is safe and staying with family

Lots of helicopter traffic in and out of Hickory Regional again this morning.  Things are really bad west of here.

A number of military helos have passed through Hickory Regional Airport since Friday, including a CH-47 that I saw headed east yesterday.  I suspect they are NC NatGuard though, not regular Army.

The Feds don’t give a *expletive deleted*ck about Appalachia. Now if some goat *expletive deleted*er who hates America gets a goddamn hangnail they will airdrop pallets of cash but US citizens need help? Let them suffer

By the way the leading stories on CNN are crying about terrorists getting shot in *expletive deleted*ing Palestine. You have to scroll past several headlines sucking terrorist dick to get to news about this massive natural disaster. MSNBC you have to go way down as well, only they start with the TDS as their leading. Katrina was the news. Can you imagine if they halfway ignored Katrina like this? You’d never hear the end of it.

Do you think the Helene death toll is going to end up rivaling Katrina?

Much of Karina's death toll was due to local government ineptitude and corruption. Too soon if the same applies here but so far it appears not so much if any but time will tell.

Local populace ineptitude as well. There was a big difference between how citizens in New Orleans handled it and citizens next door in Mississippi handled it. I recall news stories and videos of neighbors all helping each other out - lots of black and white cooperation with no thought of race, unlike all the race baiting that went on in NOLO.

Also all those people showing up to the stadium empty handed and then complaining about MREs. I recall making some pissed off posts here at the time because the news footage showed all the places with the satellite TV dishes, so they could afford that monthly cost, but couldn't spend $20 on a couple of cases of water and a case of Chef Boyardee to get them through until the FEMA stuff arrived.

Do you think the Helene death toll is going to end up rivaling Katrina?

I think there is the potential. Not certainty but the potential. Much of that area is a warren of backroads leading to vacation cabins and people who like seclusion. How do you tell people, who aren’t from the area and are unaware of the dangers, to evacuate in a timely and effective matter? How do you ensure you reach them? How do you know the population of vacationers? How do you find them to rescue them particularly if the house they were in is gone and they are clinging to trees? Fall is of course a popular vacation time but there are a ton of one cabin/Air BnB type operations in those areas.

Too early to tell especially when the main news source is rumors and TikTok’s. There is talk of pulling lots of bodies out of the trees and people going feral basically so who knows at this point?

So apparently Okeechobee, FL declared a state of emergency and the chief of police banned the carry (open or concealed) of firearms, banned display of firearms by gun stores, and banned the sale of ammunition for a full day. I'm not sure what the single day reasoning would be, but I'm pretty sure FL has state preemption, so the police chief broke the law.

https://www.ammoland.com/2024/09/florida-city-issues-gun-ban-because-of-hurricane-helene/

Quote
The city declared a local state of emergency when Hurricane Helene approached the Florida shore. The chief of police, Donald C. Hagan, II, warned residents that the city was banning the carrying of firearms, whether the guns were carried concealed or openly. He also prohibited the sale of firearms and ammunition to anyone, no matter if it was a private sale or from a gun store. Stores were also not allowed to display firearms or ammunition. The state of emergency ran from 9 A.M. on September 26 through 6 A.M. on September 27. Although the state of emergency is over, the order is alarming to many gun rights activists.

It's a FL state law.

http://www.leg.state.fl.us/statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&URL=0800-0899/0870/Sections/0870.044.html

Quote
870.044 Automatic emergency measures.—Whenever the public official declares that a state of emergency exists, pursuant to s. 870.043, the following acts shall be prohibited during the period of said emergency throughout the jurisdiction:
(1) The sale of, or offer to sell, with or without consideration, any ammunition or gun or other firearm of any size or description.
(2) The intentional display, after the emergency is declared, by or in any store or shop of any ammunition or gun or other firearm of any size or description.
(3) The intentional possession in a public place of a firearm by any person, except a duly authorized law enforcement official or person in military service acting in the official performance of her or his duty.
Nothing contained in this chapter shall be construed to authorize the seizure, taking, or confiscation of firearms that are lawfully possessed, unless a person is engaged in a criminal act.

So premption doesn't apply here.  The real question is why a town in south east FL that barely saw any rain at all, declared an emergency?

From further reading, as soon as DeSantis was informed, he ordered them to immediately rescind it, and the local government is claiming it was a mistake. If it's actually a state statute, then maybe Desantis' office needs to look into changing or eliminating it.

Also, on the declared emergency, I was unaware of their proximity (or not) to damaging conditions, but otherwise it's also kind of weird that a town of 5000 would order something like this. Seems more in line with a big blue city. A commenter over at S2 Underground claimed to be from there, and said that no one was following the order nor were cops on the street enforcing it.

From reading more this morning, and going back to the statute that Dogmush posted, apparently it's from 1970 and meant for civil unrest, which might be why the local gov said they "made a mistake" applying it to a natural disaster. Regardless, FPC said that DeSantis will be working to remove the law altogether.

If it's from 1970, I'm pretty sure that at that time, Florida gun rights were similar to pre-Lubys Texas gun rights, where it was all "yay guns, but we don't want you carrying them in public".
