Used antifreeze
« on: October 03, 2024, 09:38:48 PM »
Apparently the auto parts chain stores in my area won't take used antifreeze, but the corporate websites say they will.

That is all.

Some motors will do that for you.

All of the auto parts stores I know of around me will take it. I can also take it to the hazmat waste area at the county landfill's transfer station.

I have an appointment to do the latter. Yes, I have to make an appointment a week in advance - for one gallon of coolant.

The reason I said mix it is that’s exactly what you the drivers from Safety Kleen do when they pick it up from the shops.

Q. How do you make antifreeze?
A. Take away her nightgown!

(In Michigan anyhow) Small quantities of household-generated mixed antifreeze can go down the drain so long as it's connected to the municipal wastewater treatment plant. Not into septic systems or storm drains.

Michigan hazardous waste laws classify a release of 1 lb or more of ethylene glycol to the ground, surface water, etc classified as a reportable release. Do the stoichiometry if you like, but municipal treatment systems can handle deminimis amounts of mixed antifreeze.
And as always, Check your local regulations.

The county here does free household hazmat dropoffs usually four times a year, which is where I take all my stuff. They don't seem to have much of a limit. I was there just two weekends ago, and stuck behind a guy in a pickup who had some of everything loaded up to cab height. I felt sorry for the workers, as in ours, you never get out of your vehicle. You drive up to an unload stuff and they do everything for you.

O'Reilly's in my district won't allow afz recycling... I suggest a community hazmat event. Monsanto used to do a big one, even with the hate...
