"At Aldi's - Yes.  Their machines only take debit cards (which I don't have/want!) or SNAP (food stamps)."

You sure about that?

Every Aldi's I've been to since they started accepting credit cards in 2016 has taken credit cards at their self-pay counters. Even the ones in relatively rural Central Pennsylvania.

Several stores I never heard of in this thread.

Local grocers are HEB and Randall's, with a Whole Foods not too far away. We USED to have Albertson's, but they closed. (Randall's is now part of the Albertson's/Safeway brand.) I think there's an Aldi somewhere at the other end of town, plus there are HEB's "upscale" Central Market stores, Trader Joe's, H Mart (Asian), Fiesta, and a couple of "organic" stores, most of which are inconveniently far away and seldom worth visiting unless you're going to be nearby anyway for something else.

HEB is preparing to take self-checkout to the next level - locally they're installing a couple of things that look vaguely like airport security scanners - I THINK they want people to use a phone app to scan their stuff as they put it in their cart and then go through the scanners to pay,  but I'm not sure how it's supposed to work. I've seen a very few people trying to go through and it appears the system has a few glitches and isn't going to catch on very quickly - looks too much like they're herding people the way ranchers herd cattle.

Thankfully, that has never happened to me !  BUT, that is why I prefer checks to plastic of any kind.  I refuse to have a debit card because, unlike credit cards, you have NO PROTECTION.  Hell, after my g/f and I split and I changed my checking account, I asked the bank's rep about "online bill pay".  She looked around, leaned towards me and very quietly said: "I know how 'safe' it is and even I won't use it !"  :O
Solved that question for me.

You do you, Boo, but checks are significantly less secure than plastic (or better yet electronic wallets).  Every time you write one you are handing your bank account, routing number, name, and probably address, unencrypted, to any number of folks in the chain of custody at the store.

I've almost given up tying to explain that to people

Aldi is supposed to have the fastest checkouts - look at the packaging sometime - there is a barcode on every side, and sometimes they're just huge... Their products seem to be the same quality as the Wally World "Great Value" stuff, or to be end runs of other stuff, and they also get some of the same stuff that Trader Joe's has... Winking Owl win is $4/bottle, and is similar to Chuck from Trader Joe's...

And it has almost doubled in price over the past few years.

We have the same stores, and I bet you also miss Shop-n-Save, like I do. I almost exclusively use Dierbergs these days. I quit going to Schnucks a few years ago, when I walked in and the employees were all wearing some thinly-disquised BLM shirts. Their website had a bunch of the usual equity and inclusion language. All that seems to have passed, thankfully.

Aldi seems to always have slow checkout lines, so I don't often go there. My wife does, though.

I think D'bergs and most other stores have more cash-friendly checkouts than you suggest, though I haven't kept a very careful count.

I should have mentioned my local Home Depot has gone all-in on self-checkout, too. I suppose post-Covid staffing shortages and increasing minimum wages are part of the reason why self-checkout is so common.

Correct !  I preferred Shop-n-Save even to Schnuck's.  I don't really like Dierberg's as they are usually higher priced, even on sale items.
Then there was that "vague wording" situation.  >:D

Dierbergs, Schnuck's, Shop-N-Save...

Don't have any of those herein Northern Virginia.

We've got Harris Teeter, Food Lion (none near me anymore), Safeway, and Giant (originally a local chain).

Also got Shopper's Food Warehouse (also originally a local chain) but they've been on the decline for years. Not sure where there are any anymore. Yeah, just looked at their website... There aren't any anywhere near me anymore.

Allegedly some of the Harris Teeters are going to be turned into either Krogers...

Shop & Save went out of business a few years ago. Dierbergs and Schnucks won't be found very far outside the greater St Louis area.

Can you be more specific about these vague words? I may have missed something.

About 18 months ago, Dierberg's had advertised several items with a certain weight range.  One of the items was Cheez-It crackers and, despite being within the listed weight range, they insisted that it was only for the 7 oz boxes and not the 12.4 oz boxes.
The AG called them out for it, calling the wording "vague" as the ad didn't specify only the 7 oz box and not both sizes, even though both were within the weight range listed in the ad.

Anyone who eats Cheez-Its deserves to get screwed over.

Hey now. They do offer a "Hot & Spicy" flavor that is rather enjoyable from time to time.

Cheez-Its and a glass of OJ are one of those horrible, awful, terrible, no-good snack combinations that I just can't resist.

I buy the knock-off Cheez-its from Aldi or Walmart.  They are not quite as good a real Cheez-its but they are good enough, especially with a little peanut butter or Cheese Wow aerosol cheese spread (I really like the Spicy Nacho flavor) and are much cheaper.

Yes, but the gas station near where I work only offers the name brand Cheez-Its for my snacking pleasure.

I'm not really crazy about any of the cheese flavored crackers, including Goldfish.

I've haven't been curious enough to try it yet, but I wonder how Cheez-it or Goldfish (etc) crackers would do for making a crumb crust for a quiche?

Cheese-Its are good.  I prefer the Big Cheese-Its.  I wouldn't say they taste like cheese, I just like them.  I am partial to crackers in general over other snacks.

The "flavor-blasted" gold fish are okay as a snack.  I am not a fan of the regular ones except maybe with soup.

Not a "hot & spicy" fan but I love the white cheddar and the "Duoz".
