WATCH: Video shows the moment a home exploded this morning in Tate Township, Ohio, killing 2 people

A neighbor told local news outlet WCPO that a man with his hair on fire came running from the house after the blast and told him he'd been working on the home's furnace when "all of a sudden it popped and exploded."

An investigation is underway.

Had one here in Virginia some years ago.

Family goes overseas, no one knows where they are. While they're gone, their house explodes, traced to a faulty gas water heater. Hell of an explosion. Damaged quite a few surrounding houses with shock and debris.

Family comes back a month later from their overseas trip and... their house is gone. Empty bulldozed lot.

Happens every so often here in St. Louis... The gas company is replacing lines everywhere.

I shut mine off. Small house, electric suffices.

Two killed, Jeeze.  From fragments, sudden compression, gas in their lungs let go?

I seem to recall the lower explosive limit for natural gas is aroung 5%?  Jeeze, at that level, the smell should be making you run like hell.

House across the street from us exploded just moments after the owners had left the house for work and they said they never smelled gas. Turned out they had someone work on a gas dryer and the FD figured the line cracked in the wall filling the walls with gas. Only thing left was the foundation.

 OP's explosion:

"Gullett said the man told him he'd been working inside on the home's furnace when 'all of a sudden it popped and exploded.' "

I'd bet the ignition source was the pilot light in the hot water heater.  Odds?

I was amazed at all the sheets of paper flying around.  I wonder if he was writing a book on "Furnace Repair."

Graveyard humor.  Couldn't resist.

Gas explosions have been going on for years but only seem to make the news when it is captured on cam somehow. Here is an interesting site that covers leaks and explosions just for May of 2024. Reading that almost makes me glad I am all-electric. ;)
