100 is a good run.  RIP, sir, you earned it.

He wasn't much of a president, but was a model *former* head of state.  I wish our current crop would take notes.

Agreed. Carter was a rather terrible president, but he seemed to be a decent man.

3rd worst POTUS during my lifetime, his Habitat for Humanity work after leaving office showed he had some good in his heart . . . though a nasty streak of anti-Semitism surfaced in his later years.

Condolences to his next of kin.

Not a good president, but a very, very good person.

I have more respect for him as a former president than I do for any other, Dem or Republican.

He went into Washington totally naive of the machine he was walking into and it visibly dramatically aged him in those years. It chewed him up and spat him back out. Compare pictures of him going in and going out. WOW

Wikipedia article on JC still says Joe Biden will give the eulogy.  Wonder how that's going to work.

Joe Biden claims that Carter wanted him to give the eulogy. Just a guess, but it was probably added to wiki because "Anybody can write anything about anything". I think it would be a disaster that probably won't happen.

In addition to Habitat for Humanity, it’s pretty amazing that a Former President went back to teaching Sunday school.

He deserves to be eulogized by someone other than Biden.

I just read this on the Fine Woodworking forum:

“I live in Atlanta GA and am a long time customer and fan of Highland Woodworking (formally known as Highland Hardware). Many years ago I attended a presentation there by either Tage Frid or Sam Maloof, I can't remember which, as I've seen both of them present there. In any case, during the presentation the presenter paused for a second and then said "next slide Mr. President". I turned around and there was Jimmy Carter manning the slide projector!!! It was so very cool.”

Anyone notice how Biden took the opportunity to talk about Jimmy Carter and turned it into an opportunity to take a petulant swipe at Donald Trump?

My biggest gripe with Carter's policies and later statements? He was not a friend of Israel and made several statements after his presidency that the United States should formally recognize Hamas as a legitimate political organization, not the organ of terrorism that it is.

CNN's Scott Jennings Spits Facts About Jimmy Carter

https://rumble.com/v64ku7y-cnns-scott-jennings-spits-facts-about-jimmy-carter.html

I'm seeing more and more of that kind of stuff that I wasn't aware of, including some pretty severe Jew hate. I don't want to dump an an RIP thread, but it looks like it might be better to remember his pre-presidential time, when he served his country in the Navy.

I think many folks rose colored view of Mr. Carter has been formed by time, and memory holing of his "accomplishments".

I was in Southern Africa thus summer, and so recently reminded that he was instrumental in the fall of Rhodesia and the acendancy of Mugabe.  His policies also started SA on the slow path to eating itself that it's on today.

He was also notorious for unilaterally *expletive deleted*ing up US foreign policy by traveling places and promising things long after he was no longer in the government.

I hope his family can find comfort in his life, and they have my condolences for the loss of a loved one, i also genuinely hope he finds peace in whatever awaits us after this. But Jimmy Carter was not a good President or former President. Millions of people around the world would be better off if he had stuck to peanut farming.

. . . I was in Southern Africa thus summer, and so recently reminded that he was instrumental in the fall of Rhodesia and the acendancy of Mugabe.  His policies also started SA on the slow path to eating itself that it's on today . . .
IIRC, part of that was his decision to abide by the international embargo on Rhodesian chrome, buying it instead from that great defender of human rights, the Soviet Union. At 4x the price. Some believe that this influx of hard currency encouraged the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. With repercussions we're still feeling today.

"Human Rights" was Jimmy's reasoning . . . Rhodesian chrome bad. But at the same time, Ugandan coffee good. (Idi Amin, a self-proclaimed cannibal, was ruling Uganda back then. It seems to me that eating people is a pretty serious human rights violation.)
Trump won in 2016. And again in 2024. Democrats haven't been so offended since Republicans came along and freed their slaves.

"I think many folks rose colored view of Mr. Carter has been formed by time, and memory holing of his "accomplishments".

So, he's a human being.

I don't think anyone here is saying he's perfect, or anything close to it, just that he did more good for others in his post presidency years than most of the rest of past presidents did... combined.

Does that excuse everything he did? Nah.

But I'd be much happier to sit down and have a conversation with Jimmy Carter than either of the Bushes, Clinton, or Obama.
