Lots to do
« on: January 01, 2025, 02:35:44 PM »
How’s everyone manage time for our hobbies, chores, etc? At the moment i need to work at least 6 days a week with a few 16s thrown in there. I have no time for hobbies, chores, etc. I’ve tried making a list of stuff to get done but if I work an 8hr or off day i end up sitting in the chair watching tv all day and get nothing done. Give me some ideas guys.

Idea #1- drop your tv sub. I have gone 28 years without a tv.
I have had internet (starlink) less than 2 years and it is a huge time suck.

Welcome to the forum.

You can't add more hours to a day, so you are left with prioritizing what you do with what you have.

Why do you have to work so much?  If you are living beyond your means, you could make changes that require less income leading to less work and more free time. Have a lot of debts? Perhaps you could look into debt consolidation.  A job that pays more would require fewer hours to make a living.  There are some companies that offer training to meet what they need in good paying jobs.
If for some reason you are stuck in your current situation, you could commit to that to-do list and knock them down, one at a time. TV is mostly crap, so you could set a limit on yourself on how many hours a day you watch.

limit sitting in the chair on the 8 hour/ no work days

Break the chores and hobbies into manageable blocks of 2-4 hours. If you work an 8 hr day, come home, and eat dinner and do an hour of cleaning it’s still better than eating and watching TV until bed.

Minimize the mess so you have less chores. Clean as you go in the kitchen, immediately wash dishes after eating, do a load of laundry as soon as you get a load together and get it right over to the dryer and up. Let chores pile up and all you get is a big mess to clean up. Sweep/mop/vacuum/quickly dust once a week should take an hour, no more.

And finally, if possible, work on moving your career forward to the point where you don’t have to constantly work, or at least get away from the 16s and 6 day weeks. Shoot for 40-50 hour weeks if possible. And if you work swing shifts try to get away from that, that saps all energy and desire. I used to have to work a similar schedule and it would have killed me if I didn’t get away from it.

On the 16 hour days you aren’t going to get anything done besides sleeping and eating. But you have to set an alarm on the next day and force yourself to get up and be productive on the day you don’t work instead of rotting around all day.

Welcome.

Then don't retire as I have never worked so hard in my life.  Forget 8 or occasional 16 hour shifts as it's like nonstop 18 hour servitude for slave driver, I mean wife of 30 years.

There's no day off.  No sick call.  No union breaks.  No vacation in "honey do" endless chores where you are "it".  =D

But I get "free" housing and food is great.

Seriously, start with a daily routine and stick to it.  Journal writing is another.  Then complete your "Bucket List" and do the opposite for another. ;)

If you are still bored/uncertain, "What would you do if you knew you were dying tomorrow?" should get you in proper perspectives.

I manage my time poorly.  Thankfully work doesn't take up that many hours.  I do tend to put off cleaning too much.

I got rid of cable years ago.  Plenty of online news shows (youtube) and other stuff that is more informative than just about anything on TV.  I have an antenna in the window to pick up the local news stations for weather.  A lot of youtube shows can be listened to without staring at the phone.

Welcome aboard!

I've got a similar problem.  Work 40hrs/week and don't have the energy to do much else.  Get home from work and spend 1 1/2 to 2 hours getting chores done, (dogs, laundry, bills etc.) eat, then watch TV & read posts here for an hour or so then off to bed.  My weekend is your Tues & Weds, so I get doc appointments & shopping done on those days.  Usually end up with either my self and/or DW having up to 6 doc appointments per month kind of eats into the time available for yard & buildings upkeep.  Body's so far gone that I feel I should take at least one weekend day to recoup, but there's too much that needs to be done.  Takes a lot of "want to" to get out of bed and outside to get 'er done.  I make lists of what has to be done, prioritize, then knock them out.

Trying to multi-task, (read, watch TV, listen to music and talk with DW at the same time), and working more efficiently around the house helps get things done.

Answer that question carefully. =D

I asked him about dinosaurs and realized he doesn't know squat about them.
I like dinosaurs ... Especially purple one my daughter liked, named Barney. =D

BTW, do you ask that question of all new members?

And what are you trying to find out by asking that question?  I am curious.

How’s everyone manage time for our hobbies, chores, etc?

Give me some ideas guys.
This is how my wife the slave driver manages my retirement life "time" - Live life with utmost PASSION:

- Establish CORE DAILY ROUTINE for survival of the physical body and mind (Proper sleep cycle, meal planning, shopping for food, cooking, eating, cleaning, resting/naps, relaxation (music, TV, YT, etc.) and source(s) of income

- Determine LIFE's PASSION ... What brings you utmost joy and what you must do to pursue and achieve them on a daily basis for now and later (This includes retirement life supported by retirement funds including Roth IRA/401K/Real Estate, etc.)

- Identify what must be done to achieve LIFE's PASSION for each week, month, year, decade ... entire life and schedule them into monthly whiteboard that is "flexible" to allow human imperfections of making mistakes

- Enjoy life each day

So no matter what time of the day I arise and go to the bathroom during the early morning hours of 4-6 AM, I focus on life's passion for the day (Usually what brings most joy) and how to fulfill them.  After fulfilling day's life's passion, I focus more on life's passion as I go to bed only to repeat next morning.  Everything else like making money, eating, pooping, etc. gets scheduled AROUND my life's passion activities.

Wife told me before retirement, I was super focused on "survival" aspect of life and I ultimately fulfilled my goals/objectives of retirement with multiple income sources that outpaced rate of inflation but in retirement, she wants me super focused on "enjoying life by pursuing my passion".

And that's what I have been doing since retirement in 2019 - https://armedpolitesociety.com/index.php?topic=70240.msg1459761#new

I have a feeling he hasn't left ... He's got much thicker skin than me and capable of tolerating more (Believe me, he's been through A LOT and REAL righteous young MAN who is generous and helpful to others in need, and often gets taken advantage of because of it ... "What?  I am the only one that showed up for range clean up day? ... Why does this happen EVERY range clean up day?").

He's going to make some lady a great husband ... He actually knows how to fix things, for real ... Like me. =D

He's here because of my invitation to "expand" life experience, not just to one forum.

Live life with utmost PASSION ... wife ... wants me super focused on "enjoying life by pursuing my passion"

Keep in mind that as you go through different phases of life (You are going through one phase right now), your definition/meaning of "passion/enjoyment" may change depending on the aspect of realities you choose/agree to participate (And we exercise "free will" in that, our choice).

What used to be your passion/enjoyment changing is OK as what's important is what you do to enjoy/experience passion at the MOMENT.  So if you desire different enjoyment/passion than before, that's OK.

So even though you make "mistakes" as imperfect human in pursuing "wrong" passion/enjoyment of life at particular phase of your life because you are in different phase of life pursuing "same" previous enjoyment/passion, it is still "perfect" pursuit of passion/enjoyment, if that's what you believe ... Hence why it's OK ... Make sense?  =D
