WiFi Router Suggestion?
« on: January 05, 2025, 06:48:53 PM »
I'm about to "cut the cable" and discontinue my Spectrum CATV service in favor of streaming, but I'll be keeping Spectrum internet and voice (landline). I have a couple of TVs with ROKU sticks, a Sony TV with wifi built in, and a Samsung A15 cell phone. (Entry level phone but adequate for my needs.)

I currently have Spectrum's "Sagemcom Fast 5260" wifi router, but am thinking about returning that and getting my own. It works on all my wifi connected electronics, but sometimes the Sony TV freezes a bit when streaming - don't know if it's a router issue or just my internet. I probably ought to plug in a ROKU stick and try that . . .

In any case . . . are there any suggestions for a router? Best Buy has a fair selection, but instead of relying on their sales blurb or flipping a coin, I'll seek wisdom from this august assembly.

I have an ASUS TM-AC1900 router that someone here recommended a few years ago, and it works great -- even with several Rokus streaming video over wifi at the same time.  It's in the basement and there's good signal strength throughout the house.  The only problem I've had with it is occasionally the guest network gets disabled for no apparent reason.  So I go into the setup and enable it again and it resumes working.  That might be a user error somehow.

I did just find out that its USB port only supports SMB1 protocol which is not secure, and there's not a firmware update to SMBv2 for this specific model.  (I'm attaching a 2TB HDD to used for a network drive)  I think newer models of the AC1900 do support SMBv2.

I've got an Asus RT-AC1900 router that I like very well.  It's been in use here for about four years, so it's certainly obsolete by this point, but it's been pretty much bullet proof.
It's the third Asus router I've had over the years, and they've all been pretty good.  The nice thing is third party firmware works in most of the Asus routers if you're tempted to go that way.  The stock firmware has always worked pretty well for me, though.
