Drag Queen Dies, but the pronouns. My God, the pronouns!
« on: January 05, 2025, 07:58:35 PM »
For anyone that actually cares about the ancillary specific subject, here's a link to the article:

https://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/breaking-vivienne--drag-race-34422903

But what I want to point out in particular is this sentence that I think broke my brain permanently.  Journalism is dead, as well as grammar.

Quote
But it wasn't just her charm that they was known for – during their time on the show

Use of plural they for a singular object is unfortunately overlooked in most vulgar writing to include magazines and disposable modern fiction... but the mixing of pronouns to represent the same object, plus the misconjugation "was" is just... appalling.

I predict that as pronouns get twisted like that, our language will evolve toward pronoun avoidance.  At least by writers that want to be understood.
The feral government is the only group in the known universe that can promulgate a 26-page form that collects two pages of information accompanied by 24 pages of incoherent instructions, and proclaim at the bottom of page 26 that the document complies with the paperwork reduction act.

We will have no choice. In proper English, there are only three classes of pronouns: masculine, feminine, and neuter. That's woefully inadequate in a world that recognizes a seemingly infinite number of "genders."

We are also entering an age where human writers were never really challenged to write well in high school (if at all), likely even in college, so they have no idea what good writing is and probably have never read any classical literature.  On top of that we are dropping AI written articles.  In a normal world, you could tell what was human and what was AI, but now the human writing is becoming so bad, the AI writing might be better.

What did the die from?

I was looking for that through the whole article and the author steadfastly refused to get that information.

So probably suicide, given the demographic.

These are not mutually exclusive.  (I think they are both true, although "too dumb to thrive" might be more accurate)

Too true. For the past year (plus a bit) I have been participating on a forum for writers. Some of the sample chapters that other writers post for comment and critique are indescribably bad -- so bad that the most I can do is offer comments on the first few paragraphs and then bail out.

They don't even know that a collection of words without a verb isn't a sentence.
