Anyone use something like this under their sinks?
« on: January 07, 2025, 03:52:37 PM »
I've got a sink base cabinet divided by a rail in the center, which makes getting stuff in and out challenging at times.

I have a shelf in there now, but it's not optimal, so I'm thinking of trying something like this on at least one side of the sink.

That's a relatively cheap one from Amazon, but I'm hoping that it will serve at least to organizae most of the bottles of cleaning supplies and the like, and keep them from getting pushed completely to the back of the sink cabinet where they're essentially lost in space.

I've never had sliding organizers and I've read highly polarized opinions of them (mostly about organizers for pots and pans). Either the greatest thing in the world or the worst thing Satan ever dreamed up.

I figure for $20 I might well take a chance just to see.

But, what says the hive mind?

That's cool. Looks decently sturdy, too.

We have an RO system and wastebasket under the sink, so no room.

Those are pretty good until early one morning or late at night (it always happens early or late) when bottle of cleanser falls off the backside or the scrub brush handle pokes out the bottom and it breaks or spills when you force it closed because it's in the middle of an emergency because why else are you under the sink in the dark.

Worth the risk, I think.

I've always thought something like that would be great, but the ones I've seen have been 3 figures, which seems like a bit much. For $20, I hope it works. Let us know.

I tried something similar for a wastebasket carrier that was linked to the door so that the wb came out on tracks when you opened the door.
Iirc it broke on the 2nd or 3rd day.
May your experience be better…

They look like nice full extension slides.  I put almost all my shop shelving (in cabinets) on drawer slides- it makes it much easier to get to the back of a 24" deep shelf, particularly when it is a low shelf.

Consider blocking it up an inch so a drip tray can go underneath to collect the inevitable spills.

Yeah, most of the ones I've looked at have been closer to the century price than not.

What got me thinking is that there is an 18x18 unit on sale at Woot right now that looks nice and is only like $30, but that's too wide for my situation.

I like the one I posted, as well, because it has organizer bars and I think those will make it easier to keep the bottles and the like organized and hopefully keep them from falling over and blocking the unit, as Tuco mentions.

I had a very cheap sliding unit for the garbage bag under the sink years and years ago but it was not a great unit. I finally gave up on it as I kept tearing bags taking them out and got a plastic garbage can that has worked perfectly (and Seren has never tried to go rooting through it).

Not a bad idea, but in the past 10 or so years I've never had a spill under there. And to be honest, I really don't remember any spills under the sink.

I really keep very little under the sink that would spill unless I really, really worked at it.

Maybe I've just been lucky.

I ordered one.

I figure for $20 it's hard to go wrong. If I don't like it I'll return it.

I've built similar setups using drawer slides.

I think I  have the same problem.  Two doors under the sink with a post in the middle.  Solved the problem with two close fitting tall sturdy cardboard liquor store boxes which slide in and out like big drawers for access to the stuff needed in back. Never a problem with spills or wear and tear.

I don't believe in making big problems out of little problems.

Same technique for the same problem under the sink in the bathroom. Little problem, little solution.

I'm surprised you're not using a hollowed out rock, Terry...

Under the sink is NOT a desirable place for food items.  High humidity, potentially easier access for bugs, kids, etc.

No one is talking about storing food under the sink.

My age is not a vulnerability if that's what you were maybe going for.  But I guess you were "just funnin'."

Just hit 86 last week.  :)

Turning my attention to less "high schoolish" matters, what goes under the sink(s) is mainly cleaning products, vacuum cleaner bags, long rubber gloves, extra products I use "up top," like two bottles of Listerine mouthwash, other inedible sundries.

I do use MT tissue boxes to compartmentize and store stuff and I just remembered I have a tissue box under the bathroom sink full of old Rxs and outdated OTC medications I keep meaning to get rid of (legally) somehow.

OK, the sliding insert came yesterday. I've not gotten it installed yet (I'll do that today) but I've got to say it's impressively high quality for $20. Heavy duty stainless steel wire and smooth ball-bearing tracks.

I'll give this one a couple weeks tryout and, if it works as well as I hope, I'm going to look at getting at least one more, and maybe several more, for the other cabinets in the kitchen.

Just realized that I never posted a direct link to the actual product that I bought, just a picture of it.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C33QBLZF?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

There are several sizes.

Got it installed. Was only slightly annoying in that I didn't have a bit that would firmly hold the screws.

So... Blistex DCT lip balm.

Thick and stick enough that it would hold the screw onto the bit while I drove it into the cabinet.

The device itself is really nice. I got all of my general cleaning supplies organized on the left side of the cabinet. On the right side of the cabinet I have the dishwasher stuff on the shelf that I used to have in there. The shelf isn't really all that useful. I'm thinking of ditching it and getting another one of the sliding trays for the right side of the cabinet.

I have a few things in the center -- a jug of drain cleaner, a bottle of appliance cleaner/wax, and a water filter. All fairly tall and not a good candidate for the tray.
