Not a coffee snob, but...
« on: Today at 09:51:48 AM »
Heck, I'm not even a coffee liker. I drink it because it's warm, sugar free, inexpensive, and has caffeine. Don't much care for the taste at all.

...however...

I switched to Dunkin coffee a few years back. More palatable, or at least less objectionable, than Folgers, Maxwell House, et al. Also use good RO water from our under sink system which helps a lot. Dunkin is available at Sams so isn't hella spendy. I keep a little out for convenience, but keep the rest frozen in a vacuum-evacuated Ziplock bag.

Got a reminder just how bad coffee can be when at the fam's a few weeks back. Their water is disgusting. Tastes like dirt and dead stuff. Their rural water system keeps up the safety side of treatment, but otherwise it's just nasty lake water. Super hard, too. They are a Folgers house, so a couple more notches to the bad. I drink it to be polite, but have taken to bringing along a sleeve of Coke Zero when we visit.

Dunno why I though it of that this morning, but sitting here with my breakfast burrito and Brown Happiness Water triggered the memory.

Speaking of Sam's, they now have a really inexpensive house brand, Member's Mark, a medium dark, classic roast, 100% Arabica Columbian coffee.  Arpund $13.00 for a 2.5 LB bag.  Stacks up well against the pricey coffee.

I don't like Dunkin's coffee at all. The stuff in the stores is completely undrinkable. The stuff you get at the store (beans or ground) is better, but still not great.

I truly prefer Maxwell House of the big coffee brands. Folgers is absolute *expletive deleted*it.

Lately I've not been making coffee at home much so I've been buying bags at the grocery. Mainly Tim Horton's as it's been on sale quite a bit lately.

I like good coffee.  I *can* drink anything (thanks US Army) but I really try to have some good coffee around.  Almost all of my coffee is Black Rifle, because I have them on auto ship and it keeps my logistics train full.  I will also buy a bag every month or 6 weeks from one of the local roasters that roast fresh here in town.  Much like the explosion of micro-breweries and micro-distilleries has led to a cornucopia of good booze, there's a huge range of choices of small and medium batch fresh roasters all over the US that make very good coffee.

When I visit my aunt and drink her maxwell house I am reminded of this.

I don’t know if I’m a coffee snob but is my drug of choice.
I keep a coffee kit and water in the back of my Jeep so I can brew coffee anytime anywhere.
Been pretty happy with Kirkland coffee.

Eight O Clock, Maxwell House, and Chase and Sandborn were the go to coffees in my Grandparent's house when I was a kid.

It's amazing how much safe, but crap water goes into coffee. Out here in sticksville, I have "safe" water coming out of my well, but without an iron filter and softener it often smells like H2S, and there is a distinct difference between it and my RO water when drinking it. The natives around here think I'm weird and wasting my money with filters, but they also complain about the crappy water. Only RO water in my coffee.

I get lazy on weekdays and often revert to the Keurig with Kirkland pods. Otherwise, and always on the weekend, it's either Arbuckle Ariosa or Cattleman, or a local grind, done cowboy coffee style.

One cool trick I have found (for me - YMMV) is using coffee to help me with my daily protein intake. I will mix 1/3 of a container of Costco vanilla Premier Protein into one of my morning cups for a quick 10 grams of protein. Tasty too. It's the only protein drink or powder that I have found that I can not only tolerate the taste of in coffee, but is actually good.

We get hard water but great taste from our 515’ deep well.
We have a softener for all inside except the glass filler faucet and the fridge water and ice. Soft water for bathing and washing, straight well water for drinking and coffee.
My uncle was head of pathology at Rush medical in Chicago. I don’t remember his reason but he said to never drink RO water.

I alternate between Eight O'clock Original and Sam's French Roast
Straight black on both

At my folks' old place in CA, the house well was originally drilled to ~120 feet. The water was clean, but hard. The well ran dry a couple of years before my dad sold the farm, and I paid for a new one drilled to 400 feet. That water was amazing. Clean, soft, and delicious. Sadly, we didn't get much use out of it before the place sold. If/when my house well goes bad, I'm going to drill deeper. We have a high water table here and the pump currently sits at ~40' with a ~20' water table.

What is "RO" water?

reverse osmosis water treatment/filtering.

Generally makes for a really good coffee water.

My uncle was head of pathology at Rush medical in Chicago. I don’t remember his reason but he said to never drink RO water.

Supposedly because "it can lead to lack of crucial water-borne minerals and trace elements". Mostly an old wives' tale, the tiniest bit of truth spun completely out of proportion. It's true RO water lacks minerals and elements, but it's only an issue if your diet is so poor that water is the only mineral source. It's a non-issue for those of us in developed countries unless you're on some kind of extreme crackpot nutritional regimen. Even then, a daily multi-vitamin solves the problem.

Others claim "it's so pure it strips your body of minerals" which is utter hogwash. It's people conflating pure water's potential for damaging metals to it being extra super duper dangerous scrubby to your insides. Water is water. Pure water doesn't scrub anything when you drink it, it just hydrates. Besides, the moment it enters your mouth it's so laden with saliva and other body fluids it's no longer "pure" anyway. Can you drink enough to cause depletion of certain critical nutrients? Yeah. Overhydration can cause plasma dilution and sodium imbalances, both serious and potentially life-threatening. The rest of the time, RO water is no different from tap water in how it affects your body.

I drink Super1 brand Flavored Cappuccino K-Cup/Pod "coffee" using Zero Water pitcher water (our water in Shreveport, LA is NASTY!) with a shot of milk and zero calorie ("Skinny" brand?) "Toasted Marshmallow" syrup. (NOT a "real" Covffee drinker) I DO like Café du Monde Coffee & Chicory w/steamed milk and a bunch of sugar though.

I get the Solimo k-cups from Amazon, and they have kept me from murder for a couple of years. I used to get a Hawaiian blend from Sam's, but that was 15 years ago. It's just me in the house, so brewing a pot is a waste.

St. Louis theoretically has great water.

Best water I ever tried was down in a cave just southwest of Central Kentucky... Someone had gone to the trouble of hammering a pipe deep into a crack a few hundred meters in, and it just trickled out... Would have made good whiskey. Maybe that was the reason for the pipe.

FWIW, the "bourbon trail" is in a region of karst limestone bedrock... See also "Mammoth Cave."
