The Great 2025 Tariff War
« on: February 03, 2025, 11:39:51 AM »
Figured this has become a big enough news item to deserve it's own thread

To start

Looks like they're trying to start the narrative tariffs triggered the great depression.
Some of the comments go even further claiming this is the plan.

Looks like he was catching so much heat that he shut down commenting.

Not surprising.

Of course MSNBC and CNN are making it sound like Trump bent the knee to Mexico.  ;/

Got to wonder if this is related considering the timing.

Just guessing, and this will never make the press release...

Maybe now they will quit running those TV ads on how Ontario is such a needed trade partner to the US because they don't seem to have worked. That will save them a buck or two.

In case you have missed it.

Yeah, it should be obvious even to them that Trump's initial comments/actions are usually just the start of negotiations.

Why are we starting a trade war with our biggest trade partners again? How is it making America great? What is the rationale ? And above all...why Canada and Mexico?

It appears to be an aggressive and apparently reasonably successful opening move for Trump to negotiate better deals from.

ummmm he literally said why on Social Media.  You don't have to even listen to a network talking head.   Canada and Mexico have policies of border neglect (or worse) that is facilitating human and drug trafficking across our borders.  We would like that to stop.  https://x.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1885821495080825305

Also in the time it took me to scroll to find that link, Trudeau caved as well.  https://x.com/JustinTrudeau/status/1886529228193022429

Quote
I just had a good call with President Trump. Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border.

In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar, we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering. I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million.

Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together.

Winning. Plus this means that by the time I get to Costco, the morons will have stopped buying 100 jugs each of the maple syrup, so I can get a couple of jugs.

Ha!  I actually lay out the vacuum lines for my maple sugaring yesterday.  Wasn't thinking about Canada at all at the time, but I guess I was doing my part to insulate us from the Canadian tariffs.
