The CIA has reportedly offered to buy out its workforce to realign the agency with US President Donald Trump’s agenda.

On Tuesday, it was reported the buyout will be offered to all agency employees, according to The Wall Street Journal.

A report by the WSJ revealed that the CIA is the first agency to inform its employees to quit and receive 8 months of pay and benefits.

The agency is also freezing the hiring of applicants given conditional offers, according to the WSJ quoting an aide to CIA Director John Ratcliffe.

According to the unnamed aide, the offers given to applicants during the hiring freeze are likely to be rescinded.

According to the WSJ, the CIA’s new goal involves targeting drug cartels, Trump’s trade war and challenging China.

A spokesperson for the agency revealed the move was done in part to “infuse the agency with renewed energy”, according to the WSJ.

We still don't know when people that resign under that program actually get to stop working, but it doesn't seem like this week.  This month, probably,  but not this week.

On the OP, are CIA employees not Federal workers?  How is this not just the same OPM e-mail the rest of us got?

This from CNN - https://edition.cnn.com/2025/02/04/politics/cia-workforce-buyouts/index.html

The Central Intelligence Agency on Tuesday became the first major national security agency to offer so-called buyouts to its entire workforce ...

The offer - which tells federal employees that they can quit their jobs and receive roughly eight months of pay and benefits - had up until Tuesday not been made available to most national security roles in an apparent cognizance of their critical function to the security of the nation.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe personally decided he also wanted the CIA to be involved ... offer was sent to the entire workforce at the agency ...

The Office of Personnel Management had issued internal guidance last week that some officers at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence may be able to participate in the program but that not all positions at the ODNI will necessarily be eligible ...

The decision to include the CIA in the program appears to be a recent one: As of last week, the CIA workforce was still being advised that officials were trying to determine whether they would be eligible for the program ...

The deferred resignation program ... was unveiled in a mass email from the OPM to federal employees on January 28.

The Trump administration is now planning widespread layoffs among the federal workforce soon, leaving employees across the government who don’t accept the deferred resignation offer at risk of losing their jobs.

The layoffs ... are expected to begin soon after the Thursday deadline that the Office of Personnel Management set for workers to accept the resignation package ...

The package allows them to leave voluntarily and be paid through September 30 but not have to continue working. It was not clear whether those same terms applied to the offer sent to the CIA workforce.

OK.  So it's bullshit then.

A little inside baseball for you.  That email hit and everyone in management panicked.  The FIRST commo we all got from our agencies (DOD in my case) was "We are evaluating who is and is not National Security for the purposes of this program, Expect if your job touches readiness that you are ineligible. "  On our side, those GS-14s very quickly got their peepee slapped and told that *everyone* is eligible unless their position is individually justified to OPM as national security.

Sounds like CIA just denied reality a little longer, because it's the same program the rest of us got.

Which also makes the framing"CIA offered entire workforce a buyout" complete crap.  The EXECUTIVE offered the entire workforce, including CIA and buyout, and their middle management tried to undermine that for a week before caving.

I wonder how many in the CIA will take the "buyout" offer?

Apparently, over 20,000 employees already accepted the offer - https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/5125600-trump-administration-buyout-federal-employees/

At least 20,000 federal employees have accepted ... buyout from the Trump administration ...

Employees still have until Feb. 6 to accept the offer to resign

I personally know of 5 so far that have accepted it.

At least in DOD circles, folks that are thinking about accepting it seems to have all waited until yesterday or today to pull the trigger.  Lots of folks were running retirement calculators and looking at the job market for the first week.

I mentioned in the other thread my Sister in Law works for USAID.  So far she's kinda in shock, it seems.  I'm trying to come up with a compassionate way to say "You might want to take the buyout ".
