Yep, Spring is almost here
« on: March 04, 2025, 10:21:38 AM »
Solid blowing dust outside. Northwest wind 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 60 mph. Ahhhh... Spring on the Llano Estacado.

High winds with much higher gusts, drought conditions, and single-digit dewpoints. Extreme range fire risk. Multiple rural power providers cutting power to non-essential circuits as a precaution. At least temps are moderate so loss of A/C won't be an issue. I saw lots of tree branches down this morning on the way to work. Every tree service in town is pretty much booked. Those that aren't are prowling neighborhoods.

Yup, we had the big winds yesterday. Today is beautifully calm though. I was checking my records, and last year (which was a very unusually windy year) at this time I had shingles blow off the house, which was the first time that ever happened to me. I'm hoping we go back to average blowy winds this year, which is annoying, but not damaging.

50's with rain and wind. Goes to a blizzard warning tonight. I think I'm going to run to the store and buy all the milk and toilet paper.

Got just under a quarter inch of rain this morning. Now sunny and WINDY, dewpoint is 19F, which is abnormally low for around here (just west of Austin, TX). Nearly all they're talking about on the local news is "increasing wildfire danger" interspersed with warnings about possible downed power lines. If not for all the pollen and other schmutz in the air, it would be a great day to open windows and air out the house.

Lots of rain forecast here Wednesday, with thunderstorms mixed in.  Also under a wind advisory through tomorrow with the passage of a cold front.

Not bad here (NW Denver subbies) rain, snow, driving bad, but all gone this afternoon.

But a couple of weeks ago it went to 20 below on my Taylor outdoor themometer for a couple of days... almost a week.  Thought about how critters coped with that... migrations, lower elevations, hibernation, I recall reading that mosquitos had antifreeze in their systems ( ?! ).

But there's this squirrel who runs back and forth along the fence railing in back, have seen him or it literally dozens of times, sometimes two or three times in a day.  Don't know where he's going to and from or why.

Saw him this afternoon.

He no longer had ears.

It was high 50s when I walked out of the house at 5:30.

Forecast later today is for high wind gusts and possibly severe storms. Whee!

Forecast for tomorrow is high winds with higher gusts.

Stayed too warm for the snow to stick but have some ice. The wind. It ripped the Wi-Fi antenna off the cabin and took some roofs off and trees down in the surrounding areas.

Typical Idaho "multiple false Springs" going on here. A nice calm day today, and I'm just getting ready to start a list of outside stuff I need to get done because tomorrow is 40mph wind gusts all day with possible snow.

Yesterday in St. Louis, temps were about 35.  Today, they had wind gusts in the mid-50s and a hi of 53.  Off and on, it sounded like a jet engine over my house today.

UPPER !  And I needed one today !

Saw that squirrel again for the first time since the post above.

"He" was chasing another squirrel.  "She" went by too fast to tell if "she" had ears.

Yay!

Genders assumed from who was chasing who rather than direct physical examination.

Spring is sprung.

Our Daffodils have bloomed, but the tuplips really haven't come up yet.

Some of the trees are leafing out nicely, while others are being more... discerning.

This past week we had some overnight lows in the 30s, with highs in the 40s.

Yesterday and into today we've had just nasty, chilly, rainy weather. Typical April spring weather.

The Cottonwoods out here (CO 40°N) don't even start yawning until about two weeks after the other foliage has started stretching to face a new year.

I used to use my slingshot to fling peach and plum pits in random directions and one (peach, I think) that I got right over the fence has been growing for about --what? -- ten years?  That one blooms two or three weeks later as well. I guess being a native of the southeast it's used to awakening with a higher sun angle or something.

But I suspect the ditch company may have sprayed for broad leafed weeds in that area flast fall, and it was looking a little peaked.  I guess it counts as a broad leafed weed as far as the herbicide goes.

We'll see.

The other peach / plum pits I've randomly dispersed with my slingshot I know nothing about.  They're on their own.

Make sure you go to the farm store and read the labels. They took the good stuff out of the big box retail Roundup.

God took pity on me yesterday.  The weather dried out enough where I could get my riding lawn mower (NOT a "tractor" type) and mow for the first time.  I was concerned that, having sat for at least a couple of months since the last time I fired it up, I was wondering if the battery would be able to start it.  Thankfully it did.

Haven't noticed a need for a permit... I just get the stuff that says you should dilute it... Put it on a rag on a stick, and paint my masterpiece...

As far as the Roundup, because of the litigation that is ongoing Bayer has made the decision to reformulate their herbicide they sell to the general public in home improvement stores and other places to remove the glyphosate from it. I believe they still sell the glyphosate  formula in smaller (farm type) stores. You may be able to find some of the older stuff as the sellers rotate their stock but it is getting harder. Other brands may also use the glyphosate so reading labels is a requirement if you want to buy that particular herbicide.
