USB Rechargeable Lithium AA batteries...
« on: April 10, 2025, 08:58:13 AM »
After a positive experience with the battery that came with my Thrunite Saber flashlight I decided to pick up a 4-pack of these to try in some LED ambiance candles I have, and which positive eat through standard alkaline AA batteries.

I picked up a set of these:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D4R2MPW8?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1

They're 2800 MAhr. The one that came with my Sabre is 920 MAhr.

They're quick to charge and come with a 4-pigtail usb cord (kind of short but it works) so all can be topped off at once.

Got them Tuesday afternoon, topped them off, and stuck them in two of the LED candles that I keep on the TV stand. Turned them up to high and have let them run. So far so good. No noticeable decrease in brightness (with standard alkaline batteries they'd already be dimming) despite being on for 48 hours.

I'm going to let them run until they shut off just to get an idea of how long they'll go on a full charge.

But, I'm happy enough with them that I ordered another 4 pack last night. Two will go in the LED candle in my bedroom, and two will go in the LED candle in the bathroom.

On the dim setting they provide just enough light that I can easily see Seren if she's lying on the bedroom floor, but no so much that it bothers me.

I still have several other LED candles, so I may well end up buying a few more packs of these batteries.

MAGA unto others as you would have them MAGA unto you!

Been eyeballing those but I've got a somewhat large supply of Eneloops on hand.
Anyone done a comparison of these to Eneloops? Looks like these MAY be better in things that don't play well with the lower voltage (1.2v vs 1.5v) of most rechargeables.

I have a bunch of the nickle metal hydride batteries, some Sony, some Rayovacs, and some Duracells. Been using them for quite awhile, mostly in low draw applications like my TV remote and my wireless keyboard.

I've also been using them in my XBox One controller.

I tried them in the LED candles and the results were really not all that satisfactory. They tended to lose boost even faster than standard alkalines. The Rayovacs are only 1350 MAhr, which is why they drop off so quickly. I didn't try the Duracells, I've been using those mostly in my XBox controller because they are, IIRC, 2000 MAhr, and nothing sucks worse than the batteries crapping out in your controller and getting killed multiple times while trying to change them.

The first rechargeables I got were Tenergys. Those did not last. They were 2000 MAhr, but I'm pretty sure that all 4 of them had failed within 18 months.

FWIW, one of my former boss types had a battery in his work rucksack catch fire on the way to work, so much so that he ejected it from the vehicle. Don't let 'em short out.

We have VERY specific protocols we have to follow before we can dispose of any batteries due to the potential for fires.

Same, plus using them in our BP cuffs. The last set I replaced was at least five years old, maybe more.

I use Energizer. Oddly enough, the 4-packs with bundled charger are often cheaper than just a 4-pack of batteries. I can't recall paying more than, oh, fifteen bucks or so.

Try Eneloops (made by Panasonic), they use a different nickle metal hydride chemistry. Think they have a patent on it. I found a couple in the back of drawer that probably hadn't been charged in ~10 years and they still had most of their charge. They're pricey but worth it IMHO

If these lithium batters work I'll be retiring the NiMH batteries.

The original set of batteries have been going in the candles for over a week now and they're still as bright as they were when I first installed them.

I'm very pleased with these batteries, to the point that I ordered a second set of 4 a few days later and, just now, ordered a set of 8 (with a 10% off coupon) for the rest of the LED candles with a couple left over for my XBox controller.

I'm a convert.

Good to hear.  We're giving some thought to using these in our wireless microphones the praise team uses at our at church.
I am going to order a batch to test around the house before ordering some for church.

I think they would be perfect for something like that.

You could top them up before or after services and they'd be ready to go. And at 2800 MAHr, I can't see a wireless mic burning through them during a couple hour service.

We get about two Sunday services and their related Wednesday rehearsals out of a pair of alkaline AA batteries in a wireless microphone.  That works out to about 3.5 hours of actual power-on use before new batteries are needed.  A typical AA alkaline battery is rated for 2500 mah.  At 2800 mah, we'd certainly get a bit longer life, maybe four hours, out of these lithium cells.  Any real benefit would be reducing alkaline battery costs.  I'll have to pencil out the costs to see if it's worth it, though on the surface it seems that it would be.

At that rate, I'd think that even with the cheapest alkaline batteries the lithium rechargeable batteries would pay for themselves within 6 months.
