Golf clubs
« on: April 10, 2025, 02:14:43 PM »
Hi all,

I have been debating on taking up golf for the last few years but have no idea what i am doing other than going to the driving range and hitting ball’s. I have people who can teach me but the issue is i am 6ft6 so i assume longer clubs are needed correct? I am broke as a joke and don’t/cant want to spend $1000 on clubs if i don’t end up liking it. I enjoy the driving range, so figured this would be something peaceful to do. Any advice?

Start with a lightweight (number of clubs, not actual physical weight) beginner's set.

You can get such a set at most sporting goods super stores.

You can get this set for $300 from Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/Callaway-Strata-Intro-Complete-Regular/dp/B0B9P35NLH/ref=asc_df_B0B9P35NLH?tag=bingshoppinga-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=80058323439253&hvnetw=o&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4583657844891940&th=1&psc=1

No clue how good it actually is.

A more complete set (with a 9 iron, which I feel is essential... at least it was for my shitty game!) of Callaway Strata can be had for $500 from Callaway...

I gave up golf around 1983. I am no help.
I decided if it was nice enough to golf it was nice enough to go fishing.
I could get back into it just for the social aspect now that I’m retired.
If I had time. If I had any friends…

If you’re even considering getting into golf don’t go all out and buy new gear at first until you’re comfortable playing the game.  You can get decent use gear on eBay for cheaper.  If your 6’6” you can shop for +1” length sets of irons and drivers by using the filters on eBay.  Same for Callaway used clubs.  I shop Callawaypreowned.com for 3 or 4 year old gear.

FWIW, if you are right handed, you can find a LOT of "this was the state of the art a decade or so ago" golf clubs at your local Goodwill or Salvation Army. It seems that a lot of wives aren't really aware of what Bubba had in that bag...

I’m a Callaway guy. Great clubs, and an unbeatable warranty. A friend gave me a Callaway driver he played one round with and didn’t like. I used it for two years, and then blew it apart going in to year three on the driving range. The composite back of the club separated from the titanium face. I called them and gave the serial number and they shipped me a new, current $500 driver for free plus a pre paid label to send the old club back.

That being said, the Strata sets are decent. I got my wife a set in 2020 as a starter kit. She’ll add to it as she plays more. The one warning about them is that if you’re a decently strong guy, and you go after the ball, you will eventually cave in the face of the driver. It’s made of a lower quality alloy than most. That’s where callawaypreowned.com comes in. You can buy individual clubs there to upgrade or replace what you have. You’ll often find clubs that are already +1 or +2 there as well. Plus, everything there is authentic. Something like 85% of Callaway products on eBay are counterfeit. Only safe thing to buy on eBay are used balls. Just make sure you get grade AAAAA. Anything less will have probably been sitting at the bottom of a pond for a season.

Lastly, check out golf wrx. It’s a forum that also has a for sale section. The members there seem to be fairly well off, and upgrade their equipment regularly then sell their “old” stuff online.

I am on board with buying a used set of clubs.  You can probably get a decent set for cheap.  Since you are just starting out, that will get you past the beginner stage of digging holes (if that ever stops).

You can look for better drivers or putters once you get more comfortable with your game.

I quit golfing back in the 80's. If you decide to continue you may need a custom set eventually because of your height. Or, you could find a nice open area and take some golf balls out and throw them out there and bounce them around with a .22. ;)

That’s what I do with golf balls. I use a .22 pistol.
I find they last longer that when I hit them with clubs.

You can play a complete round of golf competently with a 3-wood, a 7-iron, and a putter.

Find clubs that fit your stature, but IMO paying more for clubs that fit will trump buying a bag full of short people clubs.

Learn to get 200 straight yards with the 3-wood, 125-ish with the 7-iron, and to sink a 4 foot putt and you're ready to play.  A 7 will get you out of a sand trap, you just hit further behind the ball than with a sand wedge.  Maybe roll the club face more open for loft and account for the slice in your stance and angle to target.

And you will notice the huge number of players who think that the key to a good score is in the pro shop.

So i went to Top golf today and used their driver and could consistently hit 150+ yards and keep them straight too lol. I felt a little tall using their driver but seeing how i actually did pretty well with it i think maybe finding a garage sale set for now maybe key.

I saw an add for a new “Players! Swingers Club”
I think it is golf related but not sure.

Starts a bit slow and maybe that continues.  Has a few good moments.

If you like beer, some driving ranges will help you feel a lot more confident and help with maintaining a looser stance.

AXIS - PROTECT YOUR LOWER BACK !!
If you're in good physical shape, good.  Otherwise, start doing some cross-over toe touches to strengthen those laterals in your lower back.  Thoase are the muscles that get the most strain from that twisting and swinging of the clubs.

Same thing going to the driving range.  First time out, don't buy the giant bucket of balls to hit.

Too late. I spent an hour hitting balls and the next day everything hurt
