He met with JD Vance yesterday, too.

Cue claims of MAGA assassination of the Pope in 3... 2... 1... to make room for...

RIP.

I watched part of the Easter services yesterday. He looked to be in very bad shape. Others actually read most of his Easter address for him.

And yes, the tolerant and loving left wing social medias are all making jokes (or in some cases I guess, are serious) that meeting with Vance killed him.

We noticed that, too. Honestly, I'm surprised he lasted this long. Pneumonia at 88 usually means you don't come out of the hospital.

Any chance we can get Vance to visit the Soros family?

RIP Pope Francis.

From what I remember in 8 years of Catholic school, the only qualification to be considered for pope is that a candidate be an adult, male, Catholic. So get ready for Pope HankB the First, my children. There are probably only a couple of hundred million more suitable candidates ahead of me, so it's in the bag.

Seriously, the odds that the College of Cardinals will pick anyone outside their group are vanishingly small. I'd like to see them pick someone from the USA - maybe Dolan from New York. I don't know enough to proclaim him the best candidate, but from the few times I've seen him speaking on TV I didn't hear anything asinine coming out of his mouth -something I can't say about some other members of the church's leadership. (That alone probably disqualifies him.)
Trump won in 2016. And again in 2024. Democrats haven't been so offended since Republicans came along and freed their slaves.

Last time they did that was... checks notes... 1387.

So they're due, actually.

IIRC he was missing a good portion of one lung since his teen years. That could not have helped any.

I was listening to a talking head show late last night and they were talking about  the process. Only Cardinals under 80 years old are allowed t vote for the new guy. IIRC he said there were about 130 or so under 80 and the same over 80, for some reason that strikes me as odd but their circus, their rules.

Not Catholic. Won't miss Bergoglio very much.  He was a commie on many topics.

I hope for the Catholic Church's sake they pick a replacement that will restore their Church to doctrinal correctness.

I'd like to see them pick someone from the USA -

That would most likely be a disaster. Too many clergy in the West are eaten up with social "justice" and woke. Better someone from Africa or anyplace else.

Yup. Be funny as hell if they picked one of the African bishops for "diversity" reasons and it turns out to be one of the hard-core conservative ones.

I'm not Roman Catholic, but my impression is that most of the African higher clergy are more theologically conservative than the Europeans, Americans, and other Westerners.

The religious conservatism of "the global south" has been well-known in some Christian circles for several years now. Here's one article about it:

https://www.christianpost.com/news/the-rise-of-christianity-in-the-global-south.html

Quote
"Churches in countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, South Korea, and the Philippines have sent thousands of missionaries to Europe to set up churches in homes, office buildings and storefronts." African Anglican bishops are reaching out to conservative congregations in the United States, breaking away from the apostate Episcopal church.

....60 percent of the estimated two billion Christians in the world live in Africa, Asia, or Latin America. By 2050, there will be an estimated three billion Christians, 75 percent of whom will live in what is the "Global South."

But numbers only tell a part of the story. These Southern Christians have a much stronger belief in the authority of Scripture than their Western counterparts. As a Kenyan bishop said, "Our understanding of the Bible is different from them. We are two different churches."

This belief in biblical authority produces the exuberant faith and the desire to share it that Europeans and Americans desperately need.

It also promises to change Christianity—and not just in the Global South. According to Jenkins, "as the center of gravity of the Christian world moves ever southward, the conservative traditions prevailing in the global South matter even more."

There's a (presumably) Marxist concept called embourgeoisement, which some (non-Marxist) people have applied to small, newly formed religious sects (this was in an American context). These groups start off with more fervor than funding. Their evangelism attracts more people, and they emphasize a lot of stuff like "be responsible, avoid substance abuse, work hard, take care of your family, etc." They succeed and prosper. This brings in revenue and makes them comfortable. Once that happens, the more affluent among the group begin to focus less on their faith and want to be more like the affluent people they begin to rub elbows with. They relax a lot of their former mores and allow themselves to stray a bit from those strict rules. Eventually, their churches blend with the mainstream, and so do their people. It seems like the same dynamic is at work in that global north/south divide. The Southerners can't afford those "luxury beliefs," just the Gospel.
Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God?

Interesting point. This addresses Anglican (Church of England) and the Episcopal Church USA rather than the Roman Catholic Church, but I have seen this in practice. My college roommate became an Episcopal priest, and at one time he served as the pastor of a failing Episcopal church about 20 miles north of me. There are several formerly Episcopal parishes just in my small state that have split from the Episcopal Church USA and affiliated with one of two or three different Anglican dioceses that have been willing to expand their geographical boundaries to encompass parishes in the U.S.

Back when I was a reporter, just starting out my career, Pennsylvania was looking at legalizing small games of chance for social clubs, bars, convenience stores, and the like (separate from the Pennsylvania lottery).

I drew the assignment to talk to a bunch of community leaders -- teachers, town council members, and ministers -- to see where they stood on the subject.

Most were ambivalent on the matter, except the ministers. The Protestant denominations, Baptist, Methodist, Amish/Mennonite, Lutheran, and the like were uniformly opposed. It's wrong to strive for enrichment without working for it. Basic Protestant Work Ethic.

The Catholic priest I spoke with, however, said the church was not in any way opposed, but said that he was afraid that it might cut into Sacred Heart's bingo take. He said that as a joke and wouldn't let me print it. He was a good guy. Tried a number of times to get me off Team Methodist and into Team Mackerel Snapper.

I would like to see more of the Vatican Archives opened up --and let the Church take its lumps on any "bad" stuff that might be hidden for centuries.  Or weeks.

Fat chance.

A sip from the cup, just for flavor.

Heh.  Neat story.
