Only way I see either of them them pushing the nuclear button is if the other side has tanks rolling deep into their territory.  I predict a few missiles here and there, artillery, and maybe some air strikes followed by screaming and finger pointing across a table. This isn't the first time they've done this.

India isn't looking to put the whole world under its caste system.

Pakistan formally isn't that bad, but they are one of those places that cannot root out the real shitheads and ends up allowing radical Islam to metastasize.  Sounds like India had enough of it, and probably had been talking to Pakistan about it for a while before deciding enough is enough.

I would look for Pakistan's response to be half-hearted, ineffective, and mostly for show for their own domestic audience.

I really don't care.  The most I might care is the results of a nuke exchange on the world's atmosphere, but if those two nuke each other out of existence the net change to pollution might be positive.  A little more isotopes, but much less particulate matter in the air from their "economies".

I mean, I'm not hoping for significant loss of life anywhere, but on things that I care about, India and Pakistan are at the far edge of my personal heat map.
