I GOT MY NEW BIKE!!!
« on: June 03, 2005, 07:40:46 PM »
Man am I excited.

I just bought a new bike. It's a 2003 Suzuki SV650S w/ 3700 miles on the ODO. It's a 645cc V-twin with a yoshimura RS-3 slip on, it sounds very mean, and when you rev it, it snarls... ME LIKEY! Smiley

I like how it pulls hard from way down low all the way to redline.

I can't wait til July 1st, I'm going to have a blast!

Surely you don't consider that an improvement over your old bike... Cheesy

Congratulations, that's a sweet motorcycle.

...has left the building.

not the best beginner bike IMHO, I hoisted the front in 1st and 2nd gear being a little hamfisted with the throttle and clutch.   Good bike for hooliganism

I think you will have a lot of fun on that.  My son's did him proud for a few years and even if the actual 0-60 time is not world record, the one thing that bike does seem to have is excellent handling.

The torque lower down makes for very laid back cruising but drop a gear or two and open up - and there revolutions are there - wheelies no prob!!

Enjoy but be careful too. Smiley

I'm quickly getting used to the SV650S, its a really sweet bike.  Shifting was a tad difficult, the bike was due for its next oil change in about 300 miles, so I figured I'd take care of it myself.  Now the bike shifts very slickly.

Changing the oil on the SV is MUCH easiler than on the GS500.  The GS500 you have to remove the drainbolt, which is buried between the hot headers of the exhaust.  Then you have to remove 3 10mm nuts to remove the oil filter cover plate.  If the 10mm nuts have seized, prying them loose with a breaker bar will probably snap the stem off, and then you need to take the bike to a shop to have them fabricate a new stem and weld it to the engine.  If you manage to get the nuts off (which are behind the hot headers also), you have to carefully remove the hot oil filter cover and pull out the oil soaked filter with your gloved hand.  Put a new one in, grease a new oil filter cover o-ring, replace the cover, taking care to gradually tighten the nuts to avoid snapping the stem.  Put in the drain bolt (with a new crush washer), which is tough because the nut is slick from the residual oil, and finding the threads for the 21mm bolt is no simple feat.  The add oil and go.  Meanwhile, the oil you unavoidably dripped onto the headers is now burning and smelling wretched.

On the SV, you take out the drainbolt, which after loosening a bit with a ratchet, comes by turning it with your fingers.  The suzuki oil filter wrench slips right on the end of the OEM filter, a few turns with the ratchet and its off.  Let it drain.  Screw a new filter on, put the drain bolt back in, add oil, and your done.  So easy I did it while I was making stirfry last night.

You made stir fry out in your garage? Or did you change the oil on the Zuke in the living room?

j/k cheesy

>>" If the 10mm nuts have seized, prying them loose with a breaker bar will probably snap the stem off'<<

Spraying on a good penetrating lube (such as PB Blaster), and letting it soak for awhile, would help (anyone who was in that predicament) break loose those seized nuts.. Wink

PB B'laster and a hot torch will unstick about anything you'll come across. Good stuff.

I put 3k miles on my zuki so fast that the nuts don't have time to seize, its mainly an issue on bikes that have been sitting for 6 months.

I used a hot torch to get off a flash suppressor that was permanently attached to a FAL barrel, very WESCOG, I know.

Are you using Dino or Synthetic motor oil in it?

dino.  SV engines have lasted 100k with regular maintanence.  I change my oil every 3k, I don't see the need for super pricey oil.
This is all based on recommendations from SVrider.com, they seem to know a lot about SV's Smiley

Man, I am so jealous. I really would like to pick one up myself, but I'm not sure if making payments on something would be the most intelligent thing for me to do right now. Oh well.

Have you removed the ugly rear fender yet? Tongue
