It's not just Mike Irwin who's ticked off
« on: September 21, 2007, 08:51:53 PM »
A lot of people here on APS think that Mike Irwin is running some sort of one-man show, locking threads based upon his whims.

Sorry, but that's not the case. Ever since the Political forum was created, every moderator has been bombarded with complaints about one post or another that's offensive.

Sometimes, the person complaining may be simply looking for a way to strike back at his "adversary." More often than not, though, the person complaining has a legitimate beef.

The APS Political forum exists because the Legal and Politcal forum on The High Road simply got out of control. It was the belief of the APS moderators, based upon the past conduct of APS members, that such a situation would not happen here.

Well, it did. Othewise well-respected and congenial members have engaged in conduct that can hardly be termed "polite."

APS only exists because of Oleg Volk's generosity. And, if the forum deteriorates into the same sort of cesspool that resulted in the Legal and Political forum being removed from THR, well, that can happen here as well. In fact, the entire APS forum could disappear.

If you disagree with another poster's position, that's fine. But don't phrase your statements in words that you wouldn't say to that person's face.

IOW, think twice, post once.

It would be a shame to see APS go away.

Might be wise just to nuke Political forum now.

No need for that.

I suspect that 10% of APS members are causing 90% of the problems.  Get those 10% under control (or booted) and most of the problems are fixed.

We've already started that.

And, in all fairness, the percentage of trouble makers is much, much less then the 10% you guestimate.

With rare exception, it's the same lovely 3-4 people in 99% of the threads.

It's just that those few do such a wonderful job of being a problem.

Personally, it's getting old.

This is why I stayed out of the political forum on THR, and why I shy away from the one here.  I don't want to get caught up in the mass culling.

"I don't want to get caught in the mass culling"

I seriously doubt that there will be any mass cull simply because most posters here have shown a remarkable propensity for maintaining level-headed discussion.

As long as you can do that, you have nothing to fear.

There are numerous threads in which I could get down and dirty and really into a no hold barred debate. I simply walk away from them now when they start to heat up, secure in my knowledge that I'm right and that the other person is wrong.

Impossible.

EVERYONE knows that Mike is always right.

And that no one ever agrees with him.

Dasmi- There is to be no mass culling.  The mods got together and realized that almost all of us had given "one last warning" to a couple of particualr posters.  We decided that these people had enough "last warnings".

This is not based on one, two, or even three warnings.  But instead, on many, many warnings.

Have we thought about maybe making the Politics hole only accessible to "friends"?
Or, unmoderating it and leaving it to burn?
Those are my measly suggestions.  YMMV.

I can't remember if we considered the Friends Only politics forum or not.  As for unmoderating it and letting it burn, that's the quickest way to get this entire forum shut down.

Waterboarding, stress positions, sensory deprivation, and suspension of habeas corpus.   If that does not work, we lock him in a padded room and turn on the Yanni.

All were tried on one particularly tough terrorist.  All failed, though Yanni did get him to sweat a bit.

Then an enterprising interrogator downloaded some particularly nefarious ditty onto his iPod.  All he had to do was show the terrorist the LCD, scrolling the words of the artist:
