Tell me about Prague, and the Czech Republic
« on: October 18, 2007, 07:09:21 PM »
So, assuming that my official letter of acceptance gets here from Charles University soon so I can still get a visa, it appears that I am headed to Prague next semester.

So, anyone here ever been there?  Anything I absolutely need to see/do?  Gonna work my hardest to get to the CZ factory, just to see the birthplace of many fine firearms.

Also, I was suprised to find that if I felt like driving to the Czech embasy in Chicago, there is a chance that I would be able to take and carry a pistol there, it also appears that I am legally eligible to buy a gun there  shocked

I here its a nice place. I would put it on my to travel to list someday. Even better if I could take my gun.
I needed a mod to change my signature because the concept of "family friendly" eludes me.
Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

My roommate's girlfriend is a resident of Brno; she was over here for about a year as an Au Pair.  He's been to Praha, let me see if I can get him to write a proper response to your question.

I believe there is more than one CZ factory, or at least they used to be two different concerns.  That is, one that made "Brno" rifles and one that made CZ 75s.

Just how are you planning to drive to Chicago with a gun without getting arrested?

But it does seem as if the Czech embassy's willingness to let you experience the pleasure of unfettered carry is a good thing.  Wonder if they will become a day-trip destination for Illinois residents?

Hmmm....

The having to go to Chicago, a very gun unfriendly place, to fill out the forms to apply for concealed carry in a foreign country, who apparently trust me more than Illinois (and Wisconsin, which I would have to drive through), completely escaped me.

If you like seeing odd old military arms, apparently the palace guards in Prague carry ceremonial chromed VZ-52 rifles.

I've never been to Prague but have been told it is a place of inexpensive beer and very friendly women.

I have been to Poland and that is a place of inexpensive beer and extremely friendly women.

My brain hurts reading that sentence.  Make the trip, get the permit.  If you make the right connections, you might be able to pick up interesting hardware for very reasonable rates.  The gun shops in Bulgaria made me absolutely drool.

Anywho, I had a lot of fun with the Czech.  Nice enough folks when you get to know them.  Never went to Prague myself, but know plenty that did.  Nice place, cost of living isn't insane for urban Europe, good alcohol.  Plenty of history if you're into that.  (I'm a castle nut if you can't tell.)   Try to pick up as much of the local lingo as possible.

The famous Skoda works are Czech, IIRC. Made tanks for Hitler (Model 38t and self-propelled guns), then cars and trucks for the commies. Zbroyovka goes without saying.

So is the former Semt?n East Bohemian Chemical Works (then called VCHZ Synthesia, now called Explosia,a.s.), makers of Semtex.  Probably be a very interesting tour if you could arrange one.
