Can't believe people actually fall for this stuff
« on: November 15, 2007, 09:06:20 AM »
Caught part of a commercial last night for some soup (Campbell's, I think).  They were making a big, huge, honkin' deal about it being made with "low sodium" sea salt.

Low sodium.

Salt.

I had to dive for the remote and change the channel or I was going to scream.

That is dumb, but sea salt does contain other minerals than sodium chloride.

Um...  you realize that "salt" doesn't mean "sodium chloride," right?

Like KCl, commonly sold as "lite salt," with zero sodium.

Bet you they get their seasalt from some operation in China, not the actually respected fields in France that chefs' favored "Sel du Mer" comes from.

Bbbbbut it's sea salt, that's like, more natural, man!!

So it's diluted salt. There's less sodium because there's less sodium chloride. They could lower the sodium content by just putting in less salt; of course that doesn't market as well as sea salt.

True, but generally when the average person thinks "salt," they're thinking sodium chloride, not the nasty bitter stuff known as potassium chloride; nor any of the other salts.

True, but there ain't that much less.  Maybe a few percent from trace minerals and other assorted "stuff".

The arguement could be made that sea salt is healthier for you; NaCl isn't the only salt our body can make use of, and we do need trace minerals.

Still, I have to laugh.  Hasn't it been proven that low sodium diets can actually be bad for you?

Yes.  Sodium deficiency, while rare in these days of salt-laden everything, is a very serious matter.  It can happen when people take "salt hysteria" to unhealthy limits.  I had an aunt that ended up in the hospital with it, along with mild potassium poisoning from overuse of salt substitute, a banana-heavy diet, and too many "all natural" nutritional supplements that had high amounts of potassium.
