1964 Ford pickup in a half-section hay field in Nebraska.
instructions were "stay away from the fence and try not to hit the haystacks."
What we have here is failure to communicate.

I started out in a 1964 Ford Zephyr, something like the one illustrated below, but in bright yellow, with a four-speed manual gearbox with column shift:

Then I moved on to an late-1960's Ford 17M station wagon, also with a four-speed manual column shift:

I finished playing - err, I mean training! - on an early-1970's Ford Granada with 3-speed automatic:

After all that training on big cars, my first car was a lowly Morris 1100:

Let's put the fun back in dysfunctional!

1986 Ford Escort w/5 speed manual.  Learning on a manual transmission makes life so much easier, if you ask me.
Oh, Lord, please let me be as sanctimonious and self-righteous as those around me, so that I may fit in.

I agree, I learned on a Subaru with a 5speed. It amazes me that there are full grown adults in this world that can't drive a stick.

1950 plymouth.
I was one of the last citizens of Wisconsin to be issued a drivers license by the city police.  3 weeks after I turned 16, kids had to wait for a state trooper to come by to do tests.

But on my 16th B'day, I dragged my dad down to our local police office.
Cop on duty looks up and says, "Hi, Mike.  What can I do for you today?"
Dad says, "Kid's 16.  Wants a driver's license."
Cop says, "Gee, Mike.  I got to ride herd on the radio and can't leave to give tests.    Uhhhh.   Can he drive?"
Dad says, "yup."
8 minutes later, the paperwork was done.

1978 Chevy Monza.
151 ci 4 banger w/ a 4 speed.

Man, that thing had the longest clutch and a motor w/ about zero power.
My dad took me to the church parking lot to learn. He wouldn't let me touch the gas pedal until I was able to let the clutch out without stalling the engine on a level surface. It was a great way to get a 'feel' for the clutch.

Funny side note:
I'm looking to move up to a diesel, test drove a Ram 2500 HO 6 speed for a few hours the other day. Man, I loved that truck. However, my left knee w/ a bad ACL was starting to complain as a result of dealing w/ the clutch. Might have to stick w/ an auto.
Take Care,
Steve

1974 Toyota Corona (I was living in Japan at the time - I don't think the Corona ever made it to the US - think lower-end Corolla).

It was an automatic.  It was the only thing available to me at the time.  I've had enough access to a standard transmission that I can drive one if I have to, but don't ask me to start on an upslope.

LOL... yeah first time I drove on a hwy was on 66/495 area during rush hour... I think dad was trying to torture me and it was either that or have my mother drive (umm I think the last time I've been in a car with her driving was the day I got my Driver's Permit).

Parents' cars, a '72 Datsun station wagon and a '72 Dodge Dart (similar to Dennis Weaver's Valiant in "The Duel", but olive green). Did my first stickshift work in my brother's '67 Camaro.

Learned the stick on an old Farmall.

First car I learned in was a 99 Caravan, followed by an Early 90's stick shift F150, followed by an 82 stick shift Dodge Ram, and now I am playing around in an 03 stick Cavalier.

Once you go stick, you don't go back.

Can not remember the model but it was a big Plymouth.  Most of driving was a 64 Mercury Comet.  Both were automatics.  Dad had a Ford 3-speed PU that I played around with a little bit.  But actually taught myself to drive a stick on a 74 (I think) VW Bug.  Had to learn quick.  Bought it from highschool friend for $125 after graduation.  Sold it less than a year later for at least a $100.  Only think I did with it was tires, gas and oil.

Like so many others, 63 Ford pickup with three on the column.

My dad was a mechanic. By the time I was 18 I had been under the hood or behind the wheel of more different types of vehicles than some people have in a lifetime.

I get a big laugh watching people in one of those rented moving vans tip toeing around an inch at a time because they have never had to maneuver anything bigger than a Honda Civic.
