Any pina colada fans here?
« on: June 12, 2014, 11:51:31 AM »
Just looking for the best off-the-shelf pina colada mix, or bottled pina colada.

Any recommendations?

Not a big fan, but I thought they were just Coco Lopez, rum, and pineapple juice -- and ice.  (a little apricot brandy couldn't hurt -- it mixes very well with fruity drinks)

What he said. Also good is Coco Casaâ„¢ in the making of PC's.

If you want a good drink, use fresh ingredients not a mix.

I don't drink.  A lady friend mentioned that she likes Pina Colada's, so I thought I'd bring some next time. I'm just looking to buy a bottle of whatever booze goes in it and the mix to make it. If I want to prepare something, I'll make her shrimp etoufee'. ;)

Canned coconut cream and canned pineapple juice *is* the mix.  Or you can buy the stuff frozen; I think Bacardi sells it, and it looks like frozen lemonade concentrate.  The hard part is figuring out what rum to use.

If she likes it on the rocks, coconut rum and pineapple juice. If she likes it blended, then coconut cream (gotta be Coco Lopez) , pineapple juice and white rum.

...(gotta be Coco Lopez)

If you are after a sugar overload.  Try one of the coconut milk/creams used in Thai cooking (I like Chaokoh.)

The rum to use is a matter of taste.  Most of my crowd go for dark rums such as Myer's Planter's Punch, have almost no use for white rum.

Never understood the appeal to such mixed drinks.  Hot buttered rum is about as far I'll go in mixing drinks, and then only around Christmas time.  Otherwise, high quality brandy, and single malt scotch, occasionally some good rye whiskey and I'm a happy guy.  Cask strength gets a little water just so my taste buds don't get anesthetized (the heat of mixing with adding water also helps to volatilize the aromatics).

Think seduction drinks.  In my days as a dorm resident the Grasshopper and Brandied Grasshopper were preferred.

The Old Fashioned, made with bourbon, rye, or dark rum, is my favorite.

White rum. Bicardi works fine.  Bicardi frozen mix.  If you want to get fancy, blend in some fresh fruit (Strawberries, mangos, or pineapple depending on her taste).
Follow the directions on the mix for how much to add.  If she says its not strong enough, put a shot directly on top.
It's not too hard, and ignore the hipster suggestions and smartassery.  I get what you're layin down.

I use Rondiaz 151 in almost all rum drinks.  (you wouldn't use much 151 in a pina colada)

If the drink is too sweet, you used sweetened pineapple juice or too much Coco Lopez.

I wonder if you could use fresh pineapple and flaked coconut if you blended it in a Vitamix?  (I may have to try that sometime, but NOT when I'm trying to impress the Mrs.)  I bet it would kind of work, but probably not smooth enough.

Thanks for the serious replies.

I was going to take some pina colada mix and rum along because she likes pina colada's. It makes no sense to bring something she may or may not like. If that were the case, I'd just grab a six pack. ;)

We made candy drinks from fresh pineapples in Australia, ate them with a spoon.  I preferred mine mixed with the local rum, others went with vodka or gin.  They were great!  The fruit we used were over ripes left in the field because they could not be shipped.  After a time, the fruit fermented before we got to it.  Not very good for mixed drinks, dandy for a sort of hard cider.

Uh, no. Not in this life or any other.

This is an interesting thread, though. It's one of the curious pathologies of internet forums that the simpler the question, the more likely it is that the replies will not answer it directly.

The OP asked for recommendations for an off-the-shelf pina colada mix. I received six suggestions on how to make my own, a vote for rye whiskey, a suggestion to give her a Grasshopper, a Garth Brooks song, commentary on hipsters, reminiscing about making candy drinks in Australia, two posts in Latin, and one post with a suggestion on what mix to use.

Next time I'll ask how to change out the tail rotor on a Bell AH-1. ;)
