I've run across two women named Latrina.

Well, at least you know where they were conceived. ;)

There was a lot of name-changing at Ellis Island.

We know a fellow whose ancestor(s) came from France.

When asked for a name, the immigrant said something like "my name is ..."

So the official wrote down "Appel" - which I'm told means "name" in French  ;/

I share my last name with a very popular cartoon character.  Wouldn't say it's influenced me very much, aside from never having a nickname.  It's distinctive.  People still manage to misspell it, but they always tend to pronounce it properly.

Colondra.

I sometimes think these names are generated like they make up car names.

Random pattern of vowels, consonants, and dipthongs up to about ten letters, then read them aloud to asess how they sound.  I'm still wondering what "Alantra" means.

There was a lot of name-changing at Ellis Island.  I knew a guy whose grandfather's native name had three "Ks" in it (not one right after the other) and was virtually unpronouncable to Americans.

According to the story, the immigration  officer just said, "Okay, your name will be Kayes."

 Out of curiosity, from where did Mr. Kayes emigrate?

I've run across two women named Latrina.   =|

Did they hang out with tall black dudes called Chocolate Mousse, who drink gasoline?

Generally speaking, I have a deep antipathy toward people who have the arrogance/narcissism to give their kids awful names - like Marijuana.  Something like Apple is stupid, but not offensive.  Naming your child Marijuana pretty much tells me that you hate yourself, and resent the child you created.

There were some folks down in Colorado that named their daughter "Crystal" :)

They gave her the middle name of "River"  ;/

Somewhere on my Mom's side of the family, there's an adopted daughter named Apple.  I haven't seen her since I was a kid, and I never thought much of it then.  Or maybe, since she was the only Hawaiian I'd ever met, I just thought it was normal for a Hawaiian.

But I guess they DO have weird names in Hawaiia, like Barack Hussein Obama.

My wife's maiden name was very German and spelled with an unusual anglicization.  She was very pleased to take my my easier pronounced and relatively well known English name.

I've personally known a Robin Robertson, a Robert Robertson, and a Bob (not short for anything) Robertson. And a Richard Head.

Not sure if it's true, but I'm told a Korean couple with no English named their daughter the most beautiful-sounding word they'd heard in English:

I used to work with a girl named Tree. Her parents were Deadheads.

The worst, though, was an article I read that had a list of names matching brand names. There are kids named Lexus, Timberland and Skyy out there. That last one really gets me - naming your kid after a vodka should have some consequences. Mandatory alcohol abuse counseling, or something.
Political tags - such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and so forth - are never basic criteria. The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire.

He didn't emigrate, his grandfather did.  I honestly don't remember from where for sure, this was back in 1988 or so, but it was Eastern Europe, Czechoslovakia, perhaps, or maybe Eastern Germany.   I don't remember his grandfather's former name with the three Ks in it... and you can't blame me for that, he only said it once.

Grace Slick of "Jefferson Airplane" (then "Jefferson Starship"  [barf]) had a girl whose name changed to whatever the girl wanted. She named herself Tree for a bit, then went on to other things. Last I read she was named "America."

Frank Zappa has to be the king of this kind of cruel self-indulgence, naming his kids Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Rodan, and Diva.

George Forman named all of his sons after him (George Jr., George III, George IV, George V and George VI), but at least those are normal names.

Down here, there are always campaign signs out for someone named Robin Rape who holds some city office I think.  I guess it does help with name recognition.

My MIL hated her given name of Velma.  Can't blame her too much there.  So as a teenager she picked a new one.  Zuriel.  I still can't figure that one out.  Makes it interesting with her current husband's last name being very German.

SWMBO's name is Hilary.  I praise God every day that my name is not Bill.  Especially since, when we lived in Tucson, she had a friend named Monica.

That's been a spot of trouble for me, as I really like the name Hilary, and would even consider it for our son(due in a couple of weeks).

I almost forgot.  The guy who pretty much is in charge of our auditing/ethics department in my company is actually named Bill Clinton.  He is actually a pretty ethical guy.

How is that a boy's name?  At least go with Pat.
