Best pizza in the world
« on: November 02, 2006, 03:29:07 PM »
On another thread I read someones false assertion that the best pizza could be found somewhere in Indiana.  Indiana? The best pizza is found in New Haven at Pepe's or Sally's. Coal fired brick oven thin crust pizza.  Delicous.

Now I realize that chicago pizza lovers may have a strong case for the best pizza but I am not to sure about anywhere else. Tell me, where do you think has the best pizza?

Yes, Indiana.  Mother Bear's pizza in Bloomington, Indiana.

East Coast Eloi would not good food if it fell off the truck and hit Hillary Clinton.  Greasy, stale rubbish.

Chicago?  Blech, only Chicago would screw up a pizza by putting the toppings on wrong.  Probably a payoff to some inspector somewhere.

I've had plenty of NY pizza over the last few years.  It is like the rest of NY... over rated.  The only good thing about NY pizza is that there is always a pizza place within 100 feet of you.  I think it's a law.

The best pizza is homemade.

I enjoy deep dish pizza, Lou Malnati's comes to mind.

But as a regular food I get any of the local thin crust pizza's around me.

Chicagolands excellent thin crust pizza's are overlooked because of the connection with deep dish pizza.

I like a crispy crust on my thin crust pizza, I hate the soft crusts and that is what I associate with New York style pizza.

There is a coal fired brick oven pizza joint in Des Moines, IA that kicks ass. Centro is the name of the place and you can have just about anything you can think of on the pie.

http://www.centrodesmoines.com/

Also in the town where I live, Ames, IA there is a joint called Great Plains Sauce and Dough Company. They have like 5 choices of crust flour and I just love their Buffalo pizza.

Oh come on.  As far as pizza is concerned, New York and Chicago are STYLES...you can get get them nearly anywhere...'cept Ohio that is lol.  Here, they like to cut up thin crust pizza into little 2"x2" squares.  Personally I like New York style most of the year.  Chi-town style is great on a cold day when you are really, really, hungry.  One of my favorite places for NY style is in Madiera Beach Fl. - called DeLosa"s

The best chain pizza joint in the world is Donato's.  No one else makes a thin crust pepperoni that comes anywhere near the delicious, edge to edge topped, aged provolne covered, perfectly crusted pizza that is Donato's.

If I had to pick one single thing that I miss about the midwest and the south, it's Donato's pizza.  Oh man....  I'm drooling just thinking about this.  If you live within 20 miles of a Donato's and haven't had it yet, do me a favor and at least make their lunch buffet once, you won't regret it.

Obviously pizza was born in NY, but I'll bet they can make something on bread in Sicily that destroys any of our Americanized versions of what some sauce and sausage on bread/crust is supposed to taste like.  Smiley

I've had pizza in Italy.  Eisenhower was right: it stinks.

Best I've had was a place in Knoxville called Antonio's.  It was on the strip at UT and is closed now (I think), but it was the same, coal-fired brick oven pizza mentioned earlier.

+ 1 on eating pizza in Italy.  It's closer to a ham & olive sandwich than it is what WE consider pizza.

I remember the worst I ever had.  It was Pizza Hut in Ripley, MS, overlooking the cemetary.  Tasted like a piece of matzo with tomato sauce and cheese.

Larosa's Itilian restaurants around the Cincinnati area make the best pizza I've ever had.  Freash toppings.  Great sauce.  Crust as you like it, meaning thin/crispy, a nice middle of the road hand tossed, and a pan if you like it thick.  Only place I ever killed off an entire large pizza on my own and asked for more.

I'm thinking that a pizza topped with Dinty Moore beef stew would be pretty tasty.

Conan's and Mangia in Austin have the best deep-dish and stuffed pizza I've had anywhere.  I wish I had some now.

I have, apparently, yet to eat some really awesome thin crust pizza.  I'm not a big fan of thin crust with the consistency of a soft tortilla, nor do I like the cardboard cracker stuff.  As long as you avoid that and don't put too much sauce on, most thin crust pizza is alright.  I just never had any that was great.

I'll drive a stake in the ground for Eduardo's in Richardson, Texas.

My wife shows me a coupon she got somewhere & I order:
Eduardo's:  Eduardo's (heavy ethnic accent not easily placed...but could be Italian?)
jfruser: Hey, I got this coupon that says...
E: Yesyesyes, what do you want to order?
j: Two pizzas.  The first one I want Canadian bacon & pineapple for my wife and on the ....
E: We doanna put pinapple on pizza.  Or bacon.
j: Huh? What do you mean?
E: We only make Italian pizza.
j: OK.  Then just one pepperoni & one sausage, but with LOTS of sauce.  I want it to fall in my lap if I don't take care.
E:  Righrrightright...You come in pick up in 20 minutes.

I pick up the pizzas & bring them home.  Guess what?  Just a normal amount of sauce, the ratfink.  Then, we taste them.  Whooee, boy!  The best stinkin' traditional pizza I have eaten.  We have yet to buy another pizza elsewhere since.  Dude will only make pizza the way he wants to make it.  We pay our money, drink a glass of STFU and eat.

Oh, the guy is Georgian, and I don't mean like Scarlett O'Hara..more like Eduard Shevardnadze.  Eduard...Eduardo's?  We joke about how he might be the Pizza Commie, like that guy on Sienfeld was the Soup Nazi.  "No pizza for you, one year!"

I concur with Eisenhower!  I've had Pizza in France, and it sure wasn't the best, my friend ordered a "cheese pizza" and got a pizza covered with chunks of different types of cheese, this was in Bayeux.  My experience with Italian Pizza in Florence led me to believe that while America doesn't have "authentic" Italian Pizza, I'll take our version anyday.  The theme with my pizza there would be "thin", thin crust, thin cheese layer, and not much for toppings.  It was also really limp.

My favorite American Pizza would probably be McKenzie River Pizza Co in Missoula Montana where I went to college.  Most of my pizza is cheap and convenient.
