Nice movie moment from an unusual Western...
« on: December 06, 2007, 08:36:43 AM »
From "Purgatory", a made-for-TV movie. Sam Shepard did a great Wild Bill Hickok, and Randy Quaid was a perfect Doc Holliday.

If you've not seen this one, I recommend it. It was like a Western with a good bit of the Twilight Zone. A town called Refuge, in the middle of nowhere, where the old legends were trying to lead other lives...long after they were dead.

Two really well-choreographed gunfights, and this scene, which was just really well done, I thought. If you read stories of the old legends, the outlaws and all, might give you goosebumps. The moment someone straps on their gunbelt with the guns reversed butt-forward and steps out into the street... you know who that is. And a newcomer standing amid the line of the legends, looking left and right, about to fight alongside them...I think that'd affect anyone who watched Westerns.  smiley

Really enjoyable film with a neat plot twist.

Well worth the watch. The message sent by the ending is especially poignant considering the times we live in today.

Is that a cable movie?  Or can it be rented on DVD?

It was produced and shown on TNT, but you can buy it on DVD. Look in any store that has movies, it's with the westerns. Target had it.

Not really.

(Yes, I know since I watched the clip that it was supposed to be Hickok.)

Well, if you studied Hickock (sp?), you know that he wore his pair of 1851 Colt's butt-forward in his sash for a "cavalry draw". Yet for some reason Hollywierd always portrays him as using holsters... as well as portraying him as more clean-cut, and sometimes even, more decent. But yeah, just the two revolvers worn butt-forward is generally the tip-off that's it's him.

I've seen that movie, no one ruined it for me like they did with sixth sense
