Army of One and other Army slogans
« on: December 12, 2006, 10:03:46 AM »
A few weeks back, the Army changed its slogan again, this time to "Army Strong."  Apparently, NO ONE likes "Army of One."  Inside the Army and out, I've heard nothing but criticism for that slogan.  My favorite talk show guy immediately attacked it for being liberal.

What's up?  I thought it was pretty good.  Armies are collective by nature, but it's very true that the Army depends on each individual to do their job.  I thought of it as an encouragement to soldiers to hone their skills and take their jobs seriously.  But, I never saw any of the commercials.  Were they that lame?

The one that got me going was when I saw an Army bumper sticker in Spanish.  I thought I knew what it was but deferred to my wife for a translation.  Sure enough..."Army Of One" in espanol.  If you cannot speak the language, why are you even interested in serving in the US Army?

This was in Ft. Lauderdale BTW.

Try calling the recruiting number........press 1 for English, 2 for Spanish.
Personally, I do not understand how a bunch of people demanding a bigger govt can call themselves anarchist.

"Join the U.S. Armed Forces. Kill People and Break Things"

hey, I believe in truth in advertising. It's their job, after all.

"Join the SeaBees and rebuild the stuff we destroy"

Yes, I do realize it's more than that...our services are trying to help build a nation over there. We do as much humanitarian work, individually and collectively as a military force as we do fighting.

It does kinda gall me to see 'soy un Army' bumper stickers on vehicles.

I thought "Be all you can be" was much better.

I remember a recruiting video from one of the original Beavis and Butthead episodes where a soldier proclaimed "We kill more people by 7 AM than most countries kill all day."

"Build stuff for locals who will burn it down a week after you leave" would be pretty accurate, too  grin

Frankly, if it's combat arms, and during "less than peacetime", this is one way into the U.S. that I can live with...

As Gen. Patton said - the army is effective as a team. I think the "army of one" was an errant and foolish attempt to bolster the individual soldier's self esteem.

No way. That's a compliment, and as a grunt, it offends me that you would use it for a doggie that may or may not be a grunt.

I was a dog-faced leg infantry guy (mechanized), so I guess that made me a grunt.  And 280, there is no insult for the Army, because we are better than all the rest of you people.  Tongue  The beret colors (black, green and maroon) are all pretty cool.  It's the beret itself that needs to be put back in its place.

Roget that.  Handing out berets with undies and socks makes it pretty worthless.  Those of us who earned ours wore them with greater pride.  to hell with politically correct "don't make the average grunt's self esteem suffer because he can't wear a beret."  Earn it.

What?  My self-esteem was greatly augmented by not wearing a beret.  Let those girly airborne ranger types wear that frog-bonnet.  A soft cap is good enough for a real man.  Tongue

It always struck me as a silly slogan.  That infamous commercial showing an earnest soldier RUNNING THE WRONG WAY as tanks and men rushed towards battle didn't help matters much  grin grin

Maybe a better slogan would be "An Army of Juan".
