Foods that are toxic for your doggie.
« on: May 08, 2010, 11:43:32 PM »
I presume most of us know that dogs should not eat chocolate.  I didn't realize that grapes can also be very bad for them.  Mom and Dad used to have grape vines in the yard, from which our dog could easily have eaten.  Can't really see a dog being interested in fruit, though.

Apparently, onions, garlic and macadamia nuts are also on the list:

Moderation is the key.

Are these proclamations from the same people that can't decide whether eggs are good or bad for people?  The same ones that tell us red meat is bad juju in any amounts?

Depends on the dog. I know some people that have a dog that will steal apples out of fruit bowls on the counter and take them to a person for cutting. Yet my dog turns her nose up at fruit or vegetables.

No. Even a handful of raisins can cause liver failure in dogs. A single Onion can cause serious problems, but I don't think a dog could eat enough at one time to kill it.

Good points, bedlamite.

I had chocolate in mind when I typed that, but failed to stipulate that.

My dogs would rebel if they didn't get an occasional bite of chocolate.  The equivalent of a Hershey Kiss.  Occasionally.
Given a Mickey D's cheeseburger, they'll spit out the "onions" and pickles every time.

Living out in the country I know my dogs eat things that would kill a healthy man. They like chocolate chip cookies, slim jims and beer. The youngest one is 10. And these are lab mix not little yippers.

I've lost two dogs. One to an old mans truck tire and the other to his third snake bite.

I would click your link but I'm afraid it might be harmful to my kids.

My brother's yellow lab ate everything, EVERYTHING, except for raw broccoli and McDonald's fries.  ???  She would eat salad, drink beer, steal cat food, even once killed and ate a possum.  Might've been from boredom, though.

She even powered through a package of Kit-Kats without blinking.  She had gas, but that was it.  I'm still not convinced that chocolate is bad for dogs (well, at least Labs).

+1 on the Slim Jims.

Every time I get home from work, each dog gets a "meat stick" aka Slim Jim.  They are allowed access to the whole house and back yard, but are kept from the living room and kitchen by French doors that I installed in the hallway for that purpose.  As I'm in the kitchen unpacking my lunch bag and putting the plastic ice back in the freezer, the girls gather at the French doors.

Then we have a meat stick party in the family room.

Crap, my dog eats onions like there's no tomorrow.  I'll have to stop giving them to her.   =|

I've heard garlic is actually good for dogs though.  Supposed to be a natural anti-flea thing, IIRC.

Garlic still has the same toxin that onions have, just in much smaller quantities. Watch for vomiting and diarrhea.

My dog will only eat kibble, meat, greasy stuff like french fries, dairy, and sometimes cookies.

We like to take her to the custard stand and feed her a small cone.  Tis quite the crowd-pleaser.  I'm confident she could eat a pint of ice cream with no complications.  Doesn't seem to get brain freeze, either.  She also enjoys whipped cream.

My dog loves grapes. He'll do any trick *instantly* for a grape.
Anyway one day while cleaning out the fridge I had about 3 dozen grapes to throw away. I literally came within inches of pouring them all into his bowl. Some little voice in my head said maybe I shouldn't, so I threw them away instead. Less than a week later I happened to learn just how toxic grapes are. We had always givin small amounts of grapes to the dog, I'm really happy that I didn't give my dog those 3 dozen or so grapes that day.

Wow...didn't know about the grapes....I'd occasionally give our dogs one or two, but never more than that.

Garlic is also supposed to be a natural dewormer. No proof of this however.

Human-style ice-cream is supposed to be bad for dogs, I think, but I don't know specifically why.

We used to have a cat that liked jalapeno peppers

My dogs like grapes.  They won't be getting any more.

We've known about the chocolate issue for a long time.  Occasionally our dogs will eat half of a candy bar that one of the kids left on the table, and they have never gotten sick.

I'm willing to bet that milk chocolate contains very little real cocoa.

The onion thing is new to me. Damn, because the dog LOVES chili dogs.

Broccoli is kinda weird, because a lot of vets recommend it mixed in with food in small quantities.

Here's another link that's interesting. It also lists turkey skin as bad. My dog loves turkey too.

That is my understanding..  there is so little cocoa in mass market candy it is not an issue.  If the dog got hold of one of the fancy candy bars it would be a different story.

According to my calculations, 16.9% of a basic Hershey Bar is cocoa.  Compare that to a Ghirardelli/ Cadbury/ Godiva/ Scharffen Berger/ whatever that can have as high as 75%, which is about as high as you can go before it starts becoming unpleasantly bitter.

I think 41Mag nailed it.  =)

I don't know if it's poisonous, but potatoes and dogs are some serious bad juju.

I also know a dog can eat a crap load of fireworks to no real detriment...aside from explosive diarrhea.
