My kiddo saw that while I was scrolling down the page and asked what it was.  I was thinking on other things and absentmindedly stated what it was.  My kid is now horrified beyond words.  I don't think I will ever hear the end of this one.

Pardon me. I just gonna be over in the corner having a serious case of the heebie-jeebies. Maybe a case and a half even.

I saw one recently where a praying mantis had taken a humming bird. Equally as not cool...  =(

Thanks for the info, BridgeWalker and 280Plus.  I'm going to remember those tips.  Still having some occasional "running" problems, so I may give them a try.

Ron, I used to kill those things by the bucket load when I lived in AZ and CO.  Nighttime hunts in the yard and around the house a couple times a week, flashlight and bug spray in hand.  I really wanted to keep them away from the kiddos.
Some juveniles are even a mottled black and white, btw.  What a surprise when I found that out.

The national zoo has a couple of those. No glass seperating the people from them as the spiders can't really move except on their web.

My wife wasn't sure they were real until I blew on the web and they moved. (The zoo workers nearby were not too pleased by that, btw.)

I'm amazed no idiot has tried to pet them. I guess jumping into the bear enclosure seems more fun...

On another note, are those things legal to own? Seems like a really neat pet. I wonder though, what form does spider feces assume? Be awkward trying to move the bugger around to clean the cage.

I believe that paleo-humans were preyed upon by gy-normous spiders, way back when.  That's why we have such fear of spiders.  We're the survivors of those who reacted fastest.  IMHO, these giant man-eating spiders made a sound like that of a Remington 870 being shucked.  That's why someone who has never seen or heard such a thing knows that sound means impending death.  Go to the rainforest of darkest nowhere, sneak up behind someone who's never heard a pump shotgun, and rack it.  It will cause them to foul their loincloth.

Someone should collect as much of that Golden Orb Weaver web as possible and send it to the Gulf of Mexico.  If a thin little web will catch and hold that bird imagine what a few thousand pounds would do to the leaking well head!

Kill it.  With Fire.

Normally, I would have been tempted.  I'd have even thrown a rocket motor or two in the mix to be sure.  But, it was my folk's condo at the beach, and I didn't want to earn Dad's wrath by destroying all of the excellent remodelling he had done to the place.  He's 80 years old, owner of his very own quad-bypass, and he'd still kick my butt.

Golden orb spiders are cool.

Those golden orb spiders really are cool.  I'm partial to the average, colorful garden spiders we find around here.  It's especially interesting to see them building (weaving?) a web.
The large wolf spiders that show up in my garage from time to time are neat looking, too, but I tend to hustle them back outside so as not to scare the bejeebers out of SWMBO.

I didn't realize we had so many people skittish about spiders! I like them, myself. Useful critters. Only a couple of them scare me. Looking at you Brazilian Wandering spider and Sydney Funnel Web spider.

I'm a wuss when it comes to flying insects that sting. No, posting pictures of them does not scare me (see below), but I really hate them.
The funny thing is that I am more bothered by the thought of being stung than being stung itself. I've been stung before, and while it is not pleasant I just suck it up like I do a workplace injury.

What I hate is them buzzing around my head, in fact I hate even harmless things buzzing around my head. I have VERY sensitive peripheral vision, and I go into freakout mode when things try to sneak up on me (intentionally or not).

Big-ass Japanese Hornet:

What I do is get all 'flappy' - which I know is not what you should do - and I try to dodge them, which means that from a distance people do not see the little buggers and think I'm some idiot having a seizure.

The reason why I figure it's a lot to do with my peripheral vision, is that I will happily hunt them down, and go after them with either a plastic cup to release them outside (or blow them apart with my gas 6mm BB Mac 10). I like being the Predator, not the Prey (duh).  =D

Oh, I also hate these things with a passion:

Bloody Craneflies, drunkenly bumbling about around my head while I am at the computer...
