WASHINGTON – Taking his blowhard comedy act to Congress, Stephen Colbert told lawmakers that a day picking beans alongside illegal immigrants convinced him that farm work is "really, really hard."
"It turns out — and I did not know this — most soil is at ground level," Colbert testified Friday. Also, "It was hotter than I like to be."

Congressional committees frequently invite entertainment or sports personalities to testify on specific issues in an attempt to draw media attention. Colbert has no background or expertise in either farm labor issues or immigration policy.

Why in the world did they allow him in there
So no one will see the man behind the curtain. Distraction. Distract the masses because most of the population is stupid. Some of which get their news from Colbert and Stewart.

Nor does that particular issue suffer from a lack of media attention.

Colbert is a genius. He secured for himself a place in the annals of greatest pwn (sp??) of all time. His ratings will skyrocket. He revealed for all to see how out of touch with reality congressional committees are as well as exposing the dolt congress critters. "Red" Conyers became the spokesman for "How I went to Washington as a Congressman for my whole life and I still haven't got a clue, and I am a total embarrasment to boot." Proved once and for all that our government is a clone of the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus, without the talent. P.T. Barnum was right.
Colbert has been all over the media. I bet he's been drunk for two days celebrating.

It was a comedic coup. The setting and premise of course, the jokes were rather predicatable. Had it not been costing us an estimated 100K an hour I'd be in the ER sedated so I could stop laughing.

...to show us that it is yet possible to disrespect the institution more than they themselves already have?

Because truly damning testimony was occurring at the same time and Colbert was the perfect distraction.

Ya got Trouble, my friends, right here,
I say, Trouble right here in River City.
Right here in River City, Trouble with a capital "T"
And that rhymes with C and that stands for Congress
With their pensions and their bennies and self-made pay,
and they got theirs and they want yours
From sea to shining sea
Oh, yes, my friends
You got trouble.
Right here in River city.
With a capital T and that rhymes with D and that stands for Dumb.
Right here in River City.
You got trouble.
