Was trying to remember the name of the blues tune playing in my head about trains, so did a quick search. Well hell, this isn't going to help. Apparently there are dozens and dozens of train songs.

There is only one train song: Midnight Special
All I could find is a version by Creedence Clearwater. Nowhere near as good as the Johnny Rivers version I grew up to.

Also by CCR: Cross-Tie Walker

Already nailed that one, natch.
And now, for a train song that's completely different:

When I saw the hread title "City of New Orleans" was the first thing that popped into my mind. Many of the others I've never even heard of. I've led a sheltered life...........
-
I usually think of the Seldom Scene's rendition of "City of New Orleans." Hard to imagine anyone does it better. Sadly, I don't have it on hand, and it doesn't seem to be on Youtube.

It seems "City of New Orleans" was actually written by Steve Goodman, not Guthrie.

There's a line in Arlo's song that he "borrowed" from an older piece, "passengers will please refrain."
Yup, Passengers Will Please Refrain is a song its own self.
My grandmother used to sing this to us:
Passengers will please refrain
From flushing toilets while the train
Is standing in the station. I love you.
We encourage constipation
While the train is in the station.
Moonlight always makes me think of you.
If you simply have to go
When other people are too slow,
There is only one thing you can do.
You'll just have to take a chance,
Be brave, and do it in your pants,
But I'll forgive you, darling. I love you.
Every evening after dark
We goose the statues in the park;
If Sherman's horse can stand it, so can you.
Washington was very firm
And Lincoln didn't even squirm.
Darling, that's why I'm in love with you,
Mabel, Mabel, strong and able,
Get your big ass off the table.
Don't you know the quarter is for beer?
You can always earn your pay,
But make your tips another way,
And I'll forgive you, darling. I love you.
And, while this will give you the tune, he sings slightly different lyrics (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJmTTlj-pwI):

It seems "City of New Orleans" was actually written by Steve Goodman, not Guthrie.
Yes, it is correct. City of New Orleans (S. Goodman) has been covered by Willie Nelson, Arlo Guthrie, John Cash, Judy Collins, and many others.
Steve Goodman also wrote the perfect country and western song, also with a train in it, and equal parts of truck, prison, rain, momma, and getting drunk.
-
Oh, and another thing....
Railroad Lady (Jerry Jeff Walker) as performed by J. Buffet on "White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean",
recorded by JJW, Merle Haggard and others, although it's more about the lady than the train.
Once a Pullman car traveler, now the brakemen won't have her,
She's riding just trying to get home again.
-
and now for something completely different...
Little Eva (Goffin-King)- The Locomotion
(the Grand Funk version is superior in all respects, but not as strong a counterpoint to the overall thread direction)

I have neglected to chide you all for failing to appreciate my hilarious post. It's a train song, get it? Rocky is train-ing.
Trust me, it's funny.

You know how when you were a kid and you heard a really cool song and you'd get a chill and the hair on your neck would stand up?
That song still does that to me, and I didn't even need to click the link.
Even a little tear.
Ain't Waistin Time.
