Title: New Kimber Custom II 1911 Govt model
Post by: grislyatoms on October 20, 2018, 01:22:48 PM
I had a Kimber Ultra Carry II 1911 that was a steaming, flaming pile. Two trips to the factory, still not right.

After the "bad guns" thread, I decided to give Kimber one more chance.

My Custom II runs *perfectly*, and is very well finished, nice looking, and "right".

With this I have done a complete 180 degree change in my opinion of Kimber.

Thanks folks for calling BS on a sample size of 1.

Are they both 5" guns, or was the lemon a mini?

Ultra carry is a wrong size gun, rule #1of 1911 shopping. Just don't.

The lemon was a 3.5"? (IIRC) barrel UCII. Utter junk.
The "new" girl is sitting on the end-table right next to me. 3 trips to the range, ~500 rounds. 100% reliable over a variety of ammo.
I'll stop knocking Kimber now.

They have to be flawless in performance to make it to the end-table. =D

My Rock River Arms Commander size 1911 (4 1/4 barrel) has been flawless through at least a few thousand rounds.

My Toyota was remarkably durable.

I meant to quote French regarding the wrong size 1911 and dependability, smart Alec.

Although commander admittedly isn’t ultra carry.

I had a commander length gun once and it was utter garbage, I don't blame the barrel length, I blame me being young, dumb and investing in dubious metallurgy and machining of a Philippine origin.

Commander doesn't seem a terrible trade off, just too much happening quickly in a short space with the micro guns. Why I gave up carrying compact autos of all flavors, I carried a kahr and a keltec .380 for years and I finally gave up, was constantly changing recoil springs, firing carry ammo as carried to verify performance, cleaning, etc. Too much worry. Nickel plate is wearing off the cases in my revolver because I have carried the same five rounds for so long.

Then for all the tinkering and testing we do, along comes my frankengun. Colt 1911(not A1) upper with after market barrel, sistema frame, acquired separate, here's a recoil spring that looks about right, rummage around for a junk slide stop, throw it together and thus far, flawless. And apparently the top was a bullseye piece as the sights suggest, barrel well fitted, now my most accurate 1911.
