I had a commander length gun once and it was utter garbage, I don't blame the barrel length, I blame me being young, dumb and investing in dubious metallurgy and machining of a Philippine origin.
Commander doesn't seem a terrible trade off, just too much happening quickly in a short space with the micro guns. Why I gave up carrying compact autos of all flavors, I carried a kahr and a keltec .380 for years and I finally gave up, was constantly changing recoil springs, firing carry ammo as carried to verify performance, cleaning, etc. Too much worry. Nickel plate is wearing off the cases in my revolver because I have carried the same five rounds for so long.
Then for all the tinkering and testing we do, along comes my frankengun. Colt 1911(not A1) upper with after market barrel, sistema frame, acquired separate, here's a recoil spring that looks about right, rummage around for a junk slide stop, throw it together and thus far, flawless. And apparently the top was a bullseye piece as the sights suggest, barrel well fitted, now my most accurate 1911.
