Not to throw you all off by swerving back to the topic, but...

Is there a defrag program out there for OS X?

I like O&O Defrag free version, available at Major Geeks

Ok, so I downloaded that and....it disappeared! I download stuff and never see it again.
Where the heck is this stuff going to?

Try downloading it again.  It should tell you where it is being saved when you confirm the download.  Take note of the name of the program as well in case you have to run a search for it.

If you don't mind paying for good software Try out Vopt (www.vopt.com)      I've been using it since '99 or so and its far and away the best defragger I've come across. Its way faster then the onboard defragger in XP (which is a stripped down version of DiskKeeper)  It does optimise the drive, and it has a few other tools included in it as well. I keep a copy on my thumb drive and its always the last thing I run on client's computer before I leave. If you haven't defragged in a while you will definitly notice a difference after running vopt. They've got a trial, give it a shot.
Cheers,
Shawn

I use Diskeeper on my servers; it seems even able to actively defrag my SQL database files.  I love it.  Probably a bit too much for what you need for a desktop PC though.

Windoze defrag works just fine for desktops, IMO.  If you know you need more, then you're beyond the point of asking for advice in a gun-related forum.

It doesn't optimize --i.e., move all files to the front of the drive. It will defrag, but it leaves contiguous files spread all over the drive.

No, it doesn't. If you run DEFRAG with the legend turned on, it clearly identifies files that belong at the front of the drive and files that belong at the end. When the defrag is completed, you'll have a bunch of stuff at the beginning, a smaller bunch of stuff at the end, and a lot of empty space in between. The only things it won't touch is whatever files (operating system?) it says "Can't be moved." Those stay right where they are -- which is why anytime you upgrade the operating system it's a good idea to clean out, defrag and optimize the hard drive before allowing the upgrade to spread immovable files around because it's filling in unoptimized gaps.

O&O worked FANTANSTIC

It cured a lot of problems I was having, my regular defrag never worked so good!
