Late to this party, but re: CA laws for weapons transport, you can actually carry an unloaded rifle in your vehicle and it doesn't have to be in a locked container. The ammo has to be "separate" from the rifle. "Separate" seems up to interpretation, even though the regs only say "separate from the firearm", so for safety I keep it in a portable locked container. But I carry an unloaded Yugo M48 as a "truck gun" all over the place.

Pistols are another story, and that's where you have to do the "quadruple locked, separated by a titanium wall" thing.

Case law has found that ammo can be attached to the firearm in any manner, except in the chamber or in the magazine.  So you can do things like keep shells in buttstock shell holders.

All you need to do is have it in the trunk, or some other locked container.

That's what I was wondering, Harold.  Why did they search the guy's in the first place?

He was searched by a random vehicle check at the airport.

they got him on a technicality for not taking his oll ebr directly to and from approved places. he might be the right guy to take a case though the courts.

A truly BS charge in my opinion.  The intent of the law is to not allow people to just keep their AW weapon as a "truck gun".  What if your car breaks down on the way to the range and you get it towed to the shop--that would be a felony by the definition used on this man.  That is obviously unreasonable.  This man was picking up his friend on the way to the range.  The only reason they charged him with that is so they could charge him with something--they held him for like 10 hours before charging him because they could not find anything illegal.  This man has contacted the NRA-approved lawyers in SoCal (probably TM LLP) and this law will hopefully get defined in a reasonable manner, similar to the definiton of "loaded" being defined as only ammunition ready to be fired, not ammunition attached to the firearm in any manner.
