Saw Eric Clapton last night.
« on: March 16, 2007, 11:18:03 AM »
I saw Eric Clapton last night.
Damn.  He can play.  Robert Cray opened for him, his band is great as well.  The highlight for me, though, was watching Derek Trucks, Clapton's backup guitar player.  The guy can just wail.  He used a glass slide most of the night.  He makes love to the instrument.  It was a thing of beauty.

You can get some free Derek Trucks Band live recordings here: http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=Derek%20Trucks

IIRC, Derek Trucks is the nephew or son of Allman Bros. member Butch Trucks, and Derek started playing when he was, like, 7 mos. old or something Wink .

Doesn't hurt that he grew up in the tutelage of Chuck Leavell, Dickie Betts and many others.
By the time he was 8 or 10 years old, coincidentally at the height of my own lackluster professional guitar career*, several of us got to see him play when the Allmans brought him onstage and he just flat blew our tops.  I knew then, that if someone helped him manage the fame & fortune and he didn't self destruct, he would be a monster.  And so he is.

BTW, that's a dream concert for guitar-lovers: Clapton, Robert Cray and Derek Trucks.  Wow.  Goodonya!

* don't get too excited about that.  I played little college town watering holes on a circuit around SW VA -- Harrisonburg, Charlottesville, Blacksburg, etc...no big deal.

Darn, you were lucky. Clapton's my favorite rock/electric blues guitarist. I'd love to see him play someday.

Robert Cray is an up-and-coming EC. The man can just flat out PLAY!
I am extemely jealous. I've seen Cray (with Muddy Waters as opening act), but dream about seeing EC live.

Chuck Leavell, I have my long since dead "Sea Level" cassette case of them bowing their heads placed strategically in front of my long since dead 1977 TEAC top o' the line cassette player. It seems a fitting tribute.  grin

Tried to find a link to "Shake a Leg" but no luck...  sad

Sea Level-- Cats on the Coast and On The Edge were the best albums they put out, IMO.  Still love "That's your secret" and "This could be the Worst".  Also check out "A Lotta Colada".

Saw 'em on campus at JMU (jeez, when?) about '79-80 and they were just SO much fun.  TOTALLY relaxed, top-notch musicians just out there enjoying themselves in a relatively small (400 seat) acoustically excellent venue.

Thought he was against the war and all, though, in a way that makes the Dixie Chicks look like they're on the administration's payroll?

Like look at these lyrics:

Quote
When this war is over
It will be a better day
            When this war is over
It will be a better day
            But it won't bring back
Those poor boys in their graves

Ain't no sense in no action
            Killing people all the time
Ain't no sense in no action
            Killing people all the time
When it happens on the street
            We call that crime

            Man, he can't get along
            He just won't agree
            Who's right and who's wrong
            Don't matter you see
            All we know is killing
            Ain't the way to go
            Gotta get a plan
And change our ways you know

Hmm. Just whom is he criticizing in the second verse?

Son was in London last summer. Guy he met said, "Hey, Clapton's in town tomorrow, just down the street from where you're staying." Guys he was traveling with said 'You'll never get tickets the day of the show!". They'd gotten the info late the previous night and had a day off on concert day. Son rolled out early and went down the street...Royal Albert Hall, got one of the last four tickets. Called his buds and bought the other three also. Concert of a lifetime for him, EC @RAH!!!!!!!!

Cray and trucks, too, huh? WOW!

I'm so sorry...I just can't help MYSELF...

Well she was right next door, and such a strong persuader,
She was just another notch on my guitar...

The more I think about this, the more I'm thinking you may have seen the concert of the century.  And I NEVER hyperbolize.

The tour goes on, you could still get tickets.
OH! I forgot to mention, JJ Cale played a few numbers with him.

Where did you see them? LA or San Diego? I just looked and it seems the closest I can come is either Boston or NYC. I guess Hartford just doesn't pull in enough cash to make it worth their while. I guess I'll just have to settle for the Steely Dan tickets I got for May.  grin

Sure do know how to rub it in on a guy who is stuck in the sandbox and cannot attend a concert.  Sure we get the USO tours come through but where we are stationed, where they perform and the short notice given due to security reasons we have problems scheduling a convoy to go to such things.
Last concert I attended that I didn't work was Toby Keith and Ted Nugent.  Great concert and well worth the price.

Heh, the Nuge, I'm reading "Kill It and Grill It" which is actually not too bad once you get over his "Gonzo-ized" massacre of the English language. He strikes me as a wacked out but yet somehow lovable nut job. He makes reference to the tour he did with Kiss that I saw in Hartford. Good show. IIRC Kenny Wayne Shepard started out the show. BTW, wm, I think there's another shipment leaving here in about a week. Hopefully it helps heal your sandy soul.  grin

280 while not the same as live I guess I will just have to take some of the shipment, light one up and listen to Clapton or some of the other greats I have on my laptop.

I saw them (Becker and Fagen) in St. Louis many years ago. Great show!
