Damn. I want a Beaver, but at over a quarter of a million for one down here, I doubt I will ever own one.

Hose 'em down with cold water.  That'll break it up.

Aren't Beavers coming back? I thought I heard some company is reproducing the DeHavilland design. At least I heard that for the DH-6 Twin Otter.

New Twin Otters are being built.  The US Army Golden Knights just ordered three of them.

I'd heard of one case where one crashed on a drifting floe of ice, they brought in replacement parts and repaired it and flew it off again.

Heard that they are being outfitted with turboprops.

The li'l Stinson brings back memories.  I learned to fly in dad's Cessna 140, comparable to the Stinson.  Dad's was an 1950 A-model witht the single strut and had been upgraded with a 100 hp engine.  It was one of an original 13 ordered for the Sunshine Oil company as a pipeline patroller (larger tanks and observation panels in the lower door).

If you ever see an A-model Cessna 140 patroller, tail number 5350C, that was it.  I think it's running around the Amarillo area, or at least was for a while.  Dad sold it to a guy in Amarillo who stripped it to the bones and completely restored it.

*edit to add* Looked it up.  A guy in Flagstaff owns it now.

The sad thing about this is the plane on the bottom is a 1949 Stinson Station Wagon.  It is an airplane that cannot be replaced.  One of the pilots was not flying the pattern correctly or not aware of other traffic.....chris3

At a non-towered (uncontrolled) airport, radio calls are suggested, but not required.  Likewise, traffic pattern entries are suggested, but not required.

See and avoid is the idea.  Most of the time, it works.

I very nearly saw this same thing happen at Gillespie field (http://airnav.com/airport/KSEE) a few weeks back.
I had my scanner with me.  Controller clears two aircraft to land on 27 Left at the same time.  One is making the normal approach, one is making a very short approach.  The controller told the higher plane to go around eventually, but it was getting pretty close.  The lower aircraft was over the threshold, about to touch down, and the other was above and behind him, still over the dirt.

Say what you want about the Canadians, but they know how to build some damn fine airplanes.

The problem with new airplanes is that they are so damn expensive these days. Turboprops even more so. So while I would love to have a new -6, I am never going to own a personal one.

Turboprops cost a lot less to fly and maintain, though. It's why a lot of the cargo DC-3s have been refitted with them. They'll probably be flying for another century at that rate.

There was one science fiction book I read once where, after humanity had established colonies on other planets, someone very wealthy had had a DC-3 packed up and sent along, so it was flying around on an entirely other planet with twin suns reflecting off the polished aluminum. That just made me smile.

Turboprops cost a lot less to fly and maintain, though.

For a lot and a lot of hours, compared to pistons.

But when it comes time for OH, watch out!  IIRC I read where one small turboprop engine cost $600K just to overhaul  shocked

So it's pretty much priced out of the small or private operator.

If an aviation mechanic sneezes in the direction of your aircraft, you get a four-figure bill. So that's not surprising.
