On two occasions, I have been asked [by members of Parliament], "Pray, Mr. Babbage, if you put into the machine wrong figures, will the right answers come out?" I am not able to rightly apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.

So I'm downloading Ubuntu 8.10.  Doesn't seem all that user friendly just yet.  Can't even burn it to a disk without having to download some m5dum thingy.  But it has to be the right thingy, and there are about 8 dozen choices listed.  Then, apparently, I'm supposed to m5sum the download.  Then I'm supposed to download some other thingy that writes onto the CD for me.  Then I have to m5slum the disk to make sure the disk is good.

The md5sum is just a means to ensure you got a good download.  Prevents headaches in the future.

You can just burn the .iso with your favored CD burning tool & run.  Most Windows SW that I download does no integrity checks.

Yeah.  Thanks.  I understood what it was, just sayin' there was a lot of stuff being thrown at me, for something that was hailed for its userfriendlyism.   =)  'Course, it's the first OS I've ever downloaded. 

Anyway, all done with it.  But I must warn you folks not to try the Windows WinMd5sum program.  It was just weird.  And scary.  You run it, and you can't see anything happening.  CPU usage is off the scale, but WinMd5sum does not appear to be using much, according to Task Manager.  Then finally the window pops up and its done.   =|

I don't think I'll be using it right away.  I would have waited for the next release, next month, but I wanted to have it tomorrow, just in case the new machine has no OS at all, or something.  I'm gonna see if Dad will let go of the old computer, and maybe later on I can throw the Ubuntu on there and see what happens.  If that old thing has a CD-Rom drive.   :O
